Re: Coffee Machine!

It's an espresso machine and Brevilles are great machines! I have an older model and it's served me faithfully for 10 years. The one you've picked out has really good specs!

Little tips/tricks:
Any coffee is fine for making espresso. You can buy ground coffee and it works just as well as whole espresso beans. Less mess too and you don't have to buy a grinder or clean the infernal thing.

It's ok to add sugar to your espresso no matter what coffee snobs might say differently.

You can buy syrups from Starbucks and make their drinks (even the cold ones!) using their official recipes:
http://www.starbucksfs.com/Recipes/

Go cheap for espresso shot glasses (2 oz glasses) or just use a teacup or small mug or glass. If you measure out 2 oz in a measuring cup and pour it into the mug or whatever, you can get an idea of what 2 oz looks like in that mug/glass. You will then also want to measure out what 4 oz looks like (most common espresso serving size). I use a mug and I marked the 2 and 4 oz levels with a Sharpie on the inside.

Spring for a metal tamper because the plastic ones aren't worth it. Amazon has some good ones for cheap. I am perfectly happy with this one:

If you aren't confident about steaming milk, this two pitcher set with thermometer is a great deal.

If you just want one pitcher and no thermometer, I recommend still getting one of the Update brand. Much better quality than the price indicates. Some recent reviews had me worried when I wanted to buy a different size pitcher but I got it anyways and it was very good quality.

If you have very hard water where you live, it will save you money in the long run to use distilled/bottled water in your machine.

Pay close attention to the instructions for descaling! Except disregard the part where it says you HAVE to use the Breville brand tablets because they are terrible and never desolve all the way (neither do any other brand tablets we have tried). I like Urnex brand best because it's powder and desolves very fast (http://www.amazon.com/Espresso-Tamper-Sizes-Alloy-Coffee/dp/B0001XRNEM). I last got them in early October and still have a box left (I descale every month), so it isn't as expensive as it looks. Of course you can get other brands, but I recommend staying away from deLognhi eco solution. It didn't work for us at all. We actually had better luck with Borax but then had to flush the machine over a dozen times :(

That's all I can think of for now, but I'm happy to answer questions if you have any. I check FS sporadically between now and the next 4 or 5 hours and usually once or twice the next day, even after the new post goes up.

I've got it now! The first coffee ever by it was pretty good! Used the instruction booklet all the way through it. It's so gorgeous!!! I want to marry it.

Cna't think of any questions yet but that's cause I'm about to run out again.

But how have I lived without this machine before omfg. I am buying so many flavours when I go to the store!

It came with two metal tampers of different sizes! And a metal cup and measuring spoon and oh god I've had too much coffeee but so so worth it.
