Is anyone even the least bit worried about that "big" earthquake that's supposed to be coming some time in the future?

Well yeah, but nobody wants to fund earthquake warning systems. So we're kinda fucked. In 1994, I lived a mile from the epicenter of the Northridge quake.

Other LA Denizen Here:

That big one has been coming for the past 20 years at least. There's only so much of your life that you can spend living in fear.

So short answer: not really. I think we worry a lot more about fires.

Avocados grow really well in our climate and we export them all over the country! So there are year-round avocados here, they're used a lot in Mexican cuisine, and they wind up places where they really shouldn't be. AND I HATE THEM AND WISH THIS WASN'T A THING.

im sorry you have to live with that then lol. for some reason when i think of food and LA, i think of frozen yogurt. i'm not really sure why because we of course have it here on the east coast too.

I think most people think either avocados or juice cleanses/wheatgrass smoothies.

...And now you've got me craving frozen yogurt. There's a place that sells it next to my local movie theatre, I think I might get some if I go see Grand Budapest Hotel next week.

Fellow Californian here.

Avocados aren't a thing everywhere else? ...Oh.

They're seasonal! Apparently people on the east coast get excited about guacamole being available at Subway. My Californian friends out there were so mystified that you cannot get avocados year-round, or have to pay through the nose for it.

OMG ANOTHER ANGELENO! *L.A. Represent! highfive*

(Would it be creepy if I asked where in/around L.A. you live?)

For those curious, I live in West L.A., around the Santa Monica area. :)

ETA: OMG ANOTHER CALIFORNIAN/ANGELENO WHO HATE AVOCADOS

I was starting to think I was the only one. (And it sucks because my family is renting a house with a huge avocado tree in the backyard...we don't do anything to it and it still grows avocados, though most of them are too high for us to pick before they get overripe/rot and fall).

I'm pretty sure we've connected as Angelenos here before! Probably bitching about the drought. I'm a Valley Girl, born and raised. I'm in Chatsworth now. And I hate Valley stereotypes SO HARD, argh. There's only, oh, almost 1.8 million of us!

I was Valley for most of my life, but I'm a Westsider, now. (Though I may end up in Topanga, soon! Not looking forward to that, though, as I go to school in Santa Monica...)

The thing is I don't remember connecting like that (or bitching about the drought), so either my memory is worse than I thought...or there's another Angeleno around here! :D

And conversely to the drought - what's been with all the rain lately? o.O

We put avocado on everything here too 8D I didn't know it was a thing in SoCal!

How is the climate there, for real? The movies/series always show a sunny city (with a lot of smog, but still).

Re: Los Angeles / Southern California

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
The climate is in fact mild, but no where near as sunny as the media likes to show, outside of mid-summer and some nice spring days (also, we have very strict anti-smog laws, it's nowhere near the problem it used to be). Most days in winter are overcast and chilly (well, 50f at lowest, but for us that's freezing), and June has a gloom that's positively depressing.

The past few years haven't given us very hot summers, but sometimes it does heat up badly. Usually it's only for a few days' stretch though.

Also, our part of the pacific ocean is fucking cold. You don't go into it before May at the earliest unless you want to lose a limb to frostbite.

LA!anon has it right. Also, I live in "the Valley" (the San Fernando Valley), so the temperature here will usually be 5-15ºF higher here than it would be for [personal profile] nyxelestia on the Westside. Our summers can get hot as balls! Still, give me 100º of dry heat than 80 and humid any day!
