PS3 Controller Problems

I just bought a new PS3 controller, doesn't work. Won't connect, won't even turn on. I've connected it to the PS3 for hours now and nothing is working. Tried reseting the controller and the playstation and nothing is working. I'm just getting super annoyed. Anyone have any suggestion? I love video games but I'm not really familiar with the technical side of things. Otherwise I'm returning it tomorrow.

My older controller, while playable, basically presses down all the buttons on the left side of the controller every time I press down on the left stick, which is annoying and makes some games harder than they really should. And, funnily enough, disconnects more often when it's connected rather than it's wireless. Any advice with this would be awesome as well.

Is it a PS3 brand controller or is it an off-brand one? Does it even light up when you press the PS button?

Also, have you tried going into the settings and seeing if it comes up on the "switch controllers" menu to see if it's even making a connection?

PS3 controller. Doesn't light up at all.

I can't seem to find this "switch controllers menu". All I can find is Reassign Controllers and it seems to only show one controller.

Oh that's what I meant. Reassign controllers. Derp.

You might want to make sure the cable you're using works. If you have another cable, switch it out and try charging/connecting the controller with that one.

Does the light actually come on when you plug it into the Playstation, to say it's charging? When you press the PS button, do the four lights flash at all?

If so, try plugging in the controller to the PS3, and then pressing the PS button on the controller. If it's new, it needs to be plugged in to connect to a PS3 for the first time, as far as my experience goes.

Have you tried connecting it with a different wire? It might be the wire that's the problem, and it's not lighting up because it has no charge? If not, I have no idea what else it could be, sorry.
