Re: Things people have said that annoyed you recently

Not really a recent development, but repeated 'discussions' with my family about the fact that I'm atheist and don't believe in the young-earth 'theory' usually devolve into me as a seething ball of unexpressed rage. I provide as many scientific facts as I can muster and am met with: But God exists.

And I'm like...okay. Fine, whatever. Your argument is based solely on something you cannot prove to me and any proof I offer for my argument is going to be dismissed because God-Magic. There is an impasse there. SO WHY KEEP STARTING THE ARGUMENT? ARRRRH.

Man, I feel your pain. I'm sorry.

Is there a way for you to let them know that you really don't like the conversation and want to avoid it at all times in the future or will they not listen?

I haven't been able to find one yet. I try to be very calm and logical and accepting of their faith. I understand that I can't change their minds and honestly don't care what they believe. But I feel like they think if they throw God-did-it at me enough, it'll...stick, or something, I don't know.

I know what you mean. My brother is the same way but in the reverse. I'm Christian. He's Atheist. They guy doesn't know when to give it a break.

Anyway, I think for them it's probably about them worrying you're going to go to hell because you don't believe. However, since all it's doing is making you angry, frustrated, and upset maybe you could explain to them that all they're doing is pushing you further away and therefore doing the opposite of what they want? That should get them to pay attention. If it doesn't... man, I got nothing after that. Hope that helps.

I'm sorry, but I think you're wrong on this.

I do believe in God, but that one fact aside I place far more faith in what science can prove, what can be observed and measured, and what can be reasoned through, ahead of any dusty old book written eons ago by people who are no-longer relevant. Trust me when I say this: In any matter where faith is at odds with science, I will go with science ever time.

BUT.

You will never be able to prove that God does not exist. No matter how developed science gets there will always be an element of the unexplained. There will always be the question of "How did this come to be", and the answer will always be something along the lines of "TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN". Was man placed on this earth fully formed in the image of God? no, of course not, this is provably false. But what lead to the exact set of circumstances to create man? What set the events in motion to create this planet this perfect distance from this sun? What created all the elements that lead to the perfect primordial soup that housed all of human potential, and why does it seem that that potential has no limits? What was there before the big bang? and before that?

"Fighting" God with proof is a fools endeavour. No matter how much proof science finds there will always be the unexplained. There will always be another turtle underneath the last turtle you found. That endless stack of turtles is miraculous. The beautiful complex ineffable nature of all things will never be able to be effed, and we humans will never stop trying. Some people, like myself, find this endless ouroboros nature of all things to be the handiwork of God, and you simply can't ever effectively say we're wrong.

pssst

anon

this is the opposite of helping

Two things:

a) You cannot say for certain that there will always be the unexplained. We may one day unlock the answers to all of the questions that you've laid out.

b) One can no more prove the existence of god than they can prove the non-existence of god. There is no right or wrong, here, and the fact that you think that there is (and that you felt the need to say that there is in a thread started by someone who's sick of arguing about it) makes you both unhelpful and incredibly arrogant.

You don't have proof acceptable in their system any more than they have proof acceptable in your system.

Agnosticism all the way.

Yeah, I know, and that doesn't bother me at all (everyone should believe what they want! I have no desire to try to convince anyone to change their mind!)

Agnostic is probably closer to how I actually feel, but I've found that saying that tends to come across as: I am undecided, please offer me your arguments. Which I don't want.
