Well, I'm not American and do not know much, either true or untrue, about Alaska. Please tell me an untrue assumption about it?

That we're not a state! Even some big companies make mistakes, like how they'll offer free shipping to all the states, and while normally they'll say "except Hawaii and Alaska" or "continental US", sometimes they don't. If you ask why they're not offering you free shipping, every so often you'll get "Alaska isn't a state". Some people even think we're a part of Canada.

Some people think we legit ride moose, I don't know why. Texans often commiserate (they don't ride horses to school). We do, however, have a LOT of pilots! That's the only way out to the bush sometimes.

We're not all obsessed with Sarah Palin. Most people will just grunt and roll their eyes of you ask.

No one is trying to be mean when they call it Mt Denali instead of McKinley, but most Alaskans really don't like it being called that in state. It was renamed as a political move, and most people are offended by it.

There are actual cities in Alaska.

Yay, I'm not as ignorant about you guys as I thought xD

The "not a state" one is not an untrue assumption, it's just really ignorant o.O Btw, I'm highly amused about your not being counted in "continental US". Alaska is an island or in Asia now?

The moose and cities ones... sigh. It's a common assumption for many places with a wilderness image, though the animals change. From foreigners I get stuff about monkeys, from people from other states, they ask about horses and cattle everywhere.

Very interesting, thank you (:

It's not counted as "continental" because it's not connected to the rest of the states.

Well, I made a mistake. I should have said 'contiguous', as another anon pointed out. In my defense, many people use the terms interchangeably, including businesses.

Contiguous US ≠ Continental US. It really does suck shipping things there, my ex and I were long-distance while he was in Alaska.
