Alaska

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I hope people do have questions. There's a lot of weird assumptions about Alaska.

Re: Alaska

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not American and do not know much, either true or untrue, about Alaska. Please tell me an untrue assumption about it?

Re: Alaska

That we're not a state! Even some big companies make mistakes, like how they'll offer free shipping to all the states, and while normally they'll say "except Hawaii and Alaska" or "continental US", sometimes they don't. If you ask why they're not offering you free shipping, every so often you'll get "Alaska isn't a state". Some people even think we're a part of Canada.

Some people think we legit ride moose, I don't know why. Texans often commiserate (they don't ride horses to school). We do, however, have a LOT of pilots! That's the only way out to the bush sometimes.

We're not all obsessed with Sarah Palin. Most people will just grunt and roll their eyes of you ask.

No one is trying to be mean when they call it Mt Denali instead of McKinley, but most Alaskans really don't like it being called that in state. It was renamed as a political move, and most people are offended by it.

There are actual cities in Alaska.

Yay, I'm not as ignorant about you guys as I thought xD

The "not a state" one is not an untrue assumption, it's just really ignorant o.O Btw, I'm highly amused about your not being counted in "continental US". Alaska is an island or in Asia now?

The moose and cities ones... sigh. It's a common assumption for many places with a wilderness image, though the animals change. From foreigners I get stuff about monkeys, from people from other states, they ask about horses and cattle everywhere.

Very interesting, thank you (:

It's not counted as "continental" because it's not connected to the rest of the states.

Well, I made a mistake. I should have said 'contiguous', as another anon pointed out. In my defense, many people use the terms interchangeably, including businesses.

Contiguous US ≠ Continental US. It really does suck shipping things there, my ex and I were long-distance while he was in Alaska.

I assume it's not as unrelievedly tundra-y as movies would have it, but exactly how much greenery do y'all have up there?

Re: Alaska

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Most of Alaska is not tundra. Only the west coast is, and most people don't live there. Of course, like in Canada, most people live in the most lush areas.

I will say, though, the trees are fairly limited. Most of the trees you'll see are going to be pines or birches. They're all tall and really thin, no fun for playing around in (although it makes navigating the woods easy). Some cities are starting to plant imported trees to liven things up, but falls are pretty boring here. Everything turns yellow and drops off.

However, I think you can't beat the wildflowers here. The wildflowers that grow here are like garden flowers. The lupines, burnets, flox, poppies, roses, and, Alaska's favorite: the fireweed. Everyone loves them here. They're tall pink flowers that are named because they're one of the first plants to start growing after a fire, and they're very nutritious for the soil. People even make ice cream out of them! There's a popular idea that's pretty true: summer is over when the fireweeds are finished blooming. They bloom bottom-to-top, and by the top the flowers have reach the top, it's usually August/September.

What are the summers like and how long do they last? I've always heard that you have amazing summers, but I'm curious about temps and time frames.

Re: Alaska

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Very temperate and dry as fuck (not as bad as winter, but if you're coming up from the lower 48 prepare to need chapstick and maybe even lose your voice!). It's actually pretty rainy where I am, but on sunny days, the weather is perfect. The grass is a little brown and patchy, not quite as a lush as other places,

The summer usually starts in June and ends in August. Not anything special. What's special is that at the peak, down in Anchorage and the Valley, the sun rises at around 4am and sets at 1am, and even then, it stays a sort of twilight out. It's always bright day out. It's actually a lot of fun, because most people have blackout curtains for bedtime, and you can feel like your whole day is ahead of you when you're out of work!

Unfortunately, the inverse is also true, and the winters have long nights. It's easy to get very depressed.

In the more northern areas, the sun does not set or rise at all depending on the season.

Yeah, I can barely handle Maine winter hours I don't think I could do the long nights in the Alaskan winter. But I'd love to visit during your sunny summer days!

Is the social environment different than in other places? From what I've heard everything is very hemmed in.

Re: Alaska

Hm...well, much of Alaska--the cities, that is--is very diverse. Obviously we have a high Native population (a lot of people newly in Alaska will ask why there are so many Asians around...there are actually a lot, but most of the "Asians" are Native Alaskans), and there are a lot of people and cultures here.

But it's fair to say there's a divide. Unfortunately the Native population in the cities is REALLY prone to alcoholism and homelessness. Natives usually have a strong sense of community, so they often keep their opinions to themselves; white people are generally pretty sensitive to Natives. But there is resentment white people feel when they think that Natives are basically the dregs in society (similar to any other state; if a minority comprises most of the poor people, and most crime comes from poor people, they just make a minority = crime connection unjustly), and Natives who feel like the white man invaded.

Of course, it generally is white hangs out with white, Native with Native, etc.
