Is the social environment different than in other places? From what I've heard everything is very hemmed in.

Hm...well, much of Alaska--the cities, that is--is very diverse. Obviously we have a high Native population (a lot of people newly in Alaska will ask why there are so many Asians around...there are actually a lot, but most of the "Asians" are Native Alaskans), and there are a lot of people and cultures here.

But it's fair to say there's a divide. Unfortunately the Native population in the cities is REALLY prone to alcoholism and homelessness. Natives usually have a strong sense of community, so they often keep their opinions to themselves; white people are generally pretty sensitive to Natives. But there is resentment white people feel when they think that Natives are basically the dregs in society (similar to any other state; if a minority comprises most of the poor people, and most crime comes from poor people, they just make a minority = crime connection unjustly), and Natives who feel like the white man invaded.

Of course, it generally is white hangs out with white, Native with Native, etc.
