Someone said that Elsa reminded them of a cat with her nose...maybe it's because I'm tired of seeing them, but they do seem...not genuine.

In the case of Madoka at least, you can discuss it in terms of feminism without knowing the cultural context. As Urobuchi has expressed a lot about how it isn't intended to be feminist, compares the plot to Al-Qaeda, etc. So you don't really need to interpret or infer anything in regards to the creator's intent when it comes to that anime.

I do something very similar to this: I pretend that characters from shows/movies/books I like are actually characters from a specific and completely different fandom. I used to be like, "pfft what's wrong with me?" But then I was like, "fuck it," and now it increases my enjoyment.

So...just roll with it! Have fun! Let it enhance the experience!
