yeah i agree. i don't read a lot of discussions about feminism in anime but i have read them about gender. weird how many of these people claim to be against anything approaching colonialism or cultural appropriation but are totally OK with imposing western beliefs about gender onto japanese characters and creators.

IMO, and I'm honestly not trying to start wank here, it's because anime characters look "white" or "same as me" to them so they automatically assume western beliefs apply

Fill an anime with overtly japanese characters or non-pale characters who can't be mistaken for white at a glance, and you hardly see anyone discussing them through a western lens

apart from the fact that (as i'm sure you know) sjw are not all white, this is really not true at all! i see discussions about gender frequently in neon genesis evangelion and persona (as in this secret) and those are both pretty non-ambiguously taking place in japan with japanese characters.
as for anime characters that aren't pale, you really don't see very many of them at all so i don't think this is a fair comparison, either.

Not true at all? I can't help but disagree with you and strongly on that. It was extremely easy to forget NGE and Persona were set in japan, besides the character and location names. Translations and localizations of games and animes "westernize" on purpose, you know

Maybe a better comparison to make is, why is it that j-dramas and k-dramas don't get the same treatment? Maybe because when it's live action and not purposely translated over for easy western consumption, it's much harder to forget and assume these people come from a culture similar to yours?

... easy for you, maybe? I have a hard time believing that would apply to most people.

DA

Seriously. When I watch anime, to me all characters are Japanese unless otherwise noted.

I can't imagine how anyone would think anything else...am confused.

NGE takes place in a city called fucking TOKYO-3.

IT IS MENTIONED A LOT. Rewatch it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
... yeaah, if you really for a moment thought NGE was not set in Japan you must not have been paying attention at all. Just forget character and location names, there even is Asuka commenting on Japanese culture and how it clashes with what she is used to.
