Ingrown hair

How to get rid of them? Skin has closed over it and it's refusing to go away even when I pick at it. Help?

See your GP. Trying to do minor surgery on yourself is always a bad idea. Additionally, your doc will prolly be happy to see someone with A) an actual problem and/or B) an actual problem he/she can resolve fairly quickly. Does your doctor have open clinic days? Might save you the wait for the app't, though you might have to wait a while on the clinic day.

I usually use a clean needle to dig the hair out and then pull it out with tweezers. As long as you keep everything clean while digging it, you shouldn't have any infections. At least I've never had any problems.

I've done this. I get ingrown hairs on my shins. I pour boiling water over the needle after washing it first, to make it as clean as I can.

Good tweezers are your friend.

I do this, too. If I went to the doctor for every ingrown hair, I'd be at the doctor's every day! (You people who only get ingrown hairs so rarely that it's a big deal: what's your secret?)

I squeeze them like pimples. But don't listen to me, because my arms and legs are covered in scabs.

Heat pack for a few hours follow by hot salt bath and exfoliate around it as much as possible then. Well I use a small scalpel but pins works too.

What the first comment said. Your doctor will be able to remove it.

Don't pay for a doctor appointment for that crap. The needle thing works fine.

You probably don't need a doctor for it. Take a towel and damp it with hot water, press it around the area for a bit, use the hot water to clean a needle and use it to get some of the blood/puss out, coax just a little bit of the hair out, then use tweezers to pull out the rest. Clean up and sterilize the area (and hey, you finally get to use one of those tiny circular band-ids that just sits in the first aid box without use because things tiny enough to require them usually don't need a bandaid anyway!), and remember to exfoliate regularly (or at least scrub really hard when taking a bath/shower) to prevent future build-up of skin that leads to ingrown hairs.

If it's too far under the surface for the hot water/exfoliation thing to work, try swabbing with alcohol for a few days. Don't know why it works, but it has never failed to help bring the hair closer to the surface (sometimes to break through the skin on its own) for me.

Study some of the several hundred close-up videos this guy has posted of removing ingrown hairs. They cover every possible scenario. http://vimeo.com/album/2682034

I'm a self-surgery fan. I went to the doctor the first time and they put a hot towel on it, jabbed it with a needle, then tweezed the hair and prescribed me antibiotics since I'd just had "surgery." It cost $50 for the doctor and $10 for the antibiotics. Now I do it for free at home and I've never needed antibiotics.

If you go for the home surgery route, don't forget antibiotic cream afterwards to prevent infection. Re-apply as needed until the skin heals over.
