Straight-sized?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently came across this term, and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Apparently, "straight-sized" refers to being of a socially acceptable weight. Since it borrows a term associated with sexuality, it feels...off to me, like it minimizes two problems at once rather than highlighting one.

Thoughts, anyone?

That is the dumbest term I've heard today and makes little sense.

is it referring to a banana-shape body type?

where did you see this and what was the context?

Isn't it just used as the opposite of 'curvy'?

Well since they've outlawed the word 'normal,' I guess they needed something to replace it with.

Sounds like a place holder term to be honest. Like people were trying to come up with a term for socially acceptable weight, couldn't use normal because how do you determine a normal weight, nor could they use healthy, because at what weight do you begin to be unhealthy? so they settled for straight-sized for the moment until they can think of a better one.

Normal = usual = average. Not that hard.

Healthy = Google healthy weight and you will get plenty of results.

at the store I used to work at they called 2-16 the "Misses" sizes, and odd numbers + 0 were "Juniors" (which is like, narrower hips I think?), and 18 and above were "Women's/Plus Size"

Re: Straight-sized?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That is not a very good term. It's lacking in any accurate descriptor so I have no idea what it means. I've never seen the term, so hopefully it was just a weird thing you stumbled upon and not a trend.

The SJWs are continuing to expand the Newspeak exponentially. WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EASTASIA.

Sometimes I think there should be something similar to Godwin's Law for 1984.

A few crazy people on the internet is totally like a totalitarian state!

Not gonna lie, I look forward to "aren't SJW/tumblr stupid" threads.

It's like f!s has a huge crush, but can only express their love with hate.

and sometimes we get a cool discussion from them.

So what if you're gay and skinny? Will you only be "acceptable" in tumblrs' eyes if you're gay and fat?

Wow, what? I think this actually offends me as a person who is on the slender side of normal and anything but "straight".

...Huh? Who says that? Are you sure it wasn't a reference to, like, straight leg jeans?

If someone said it in all seriousness, they are stupid and they should feel stupid.

Um, if it's supposed to be lumping a privileged sexuality together with a privileged weight, it's a stupid fucking lazy-arse term.

Yeah, sure, thinness is correlated with privilege in the West (yes it is go read the studies), but the association is far from simple or rigid, and even though most lesbians I know (am one myself) don't bother to diet like most straight women I know, that's really not a GOOD association to be making in terms of making up a descriptor for "ideal" weight, nor is my observation scientific or universal. (I'm not going to say "normal" because the average, and the median, weight, is above that of "ideal" in Western societies.)

Just don't combine "oppressions", ffs. Different issues.

Well, it makes sense in that it's just plain numbers 0 through 18, unmodified by "P" for "Petite," "W" for "Woman," or "T" for "Tall."

Re: Straight-sized?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-03-09 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Uh.........

...I'm pretty sure that term comes from clothing sizes. The "straight" sizes are any sizes that aren't considered "plus size", "petite", or "tall". They're usually sizes 2-14 but can vary from to store to store, and cut for a woman of average height.

I had no idea people were using it to describe body types now, but that term has most definitely been around in apparel for as long as I've been alive (and I've seen it in my grandmother's 50s era sewing books).
