I can't speak for anyone else, but... when I first read the chapter that involved Chihiro most, right from the start I instantly thought, "It's because she's trans and her ID doesn't match her gender! That would explain everything!" And then I realized that that almost certainly wouldn't be it just because there are so rarely serious trans characters. But because of my own experiences of being trans, just something like someone conspicuously avoiding using a gendered room like a changing room or a bathroom while anyone else was around makes me wonder if they might be trans. And since that was my first instinct, I guess I viewed all of Chihiro's arc through that lens, even if that's not the "right" way to look at it.

Yeah, I do get where you come from. I would have been fine with Chihiro being canonically trans, but that's not the case. So the thing that annoys me a bit when I see it pop up on tumblr is that some people want to deliberately say that something is canon when it is fanon.
It's the same with Sakura.

I would have LOVED to have a canon trans character in a Japanese video game that was handled well. There's this one anime (Hourou Musuko, I think) that apparently manages to accurately portray trans issues (I haven't had time to watch it yet, but I've heard from people that it's great), but it's just one.

Ah, yeah, I definitely wouldn't say Chihiro is canonically trans. I mean, I kind of wish that was the case because I'm not a big fan of how Chihiro was handled in canon, but it's not.

And I can definitely say that Hourou Musuko is great! I haven't watched the anime, but I love the manga. And yeah, that's one of only... two, I think, manga that I've read that handles trans issues well. (And I can't remember the title of the other one, much to my chagrin.)
