Cosmos

Anybody else excited for or planning to watch this? I'm stoked. Of course, it won't top the original and nobody can replace Sagan, but it looks good and I love Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Never heard of it. Links? Google only gives me Sagan.

YES! I love anything to do Dr. Tyson. He's my favorite type of scientist. The type that doesn't talk down to people who may not know as much as he does but instead, loves to share what he knows. He wants to pull you up to him level instead of keeping you below so he can feel superior. He makes learning fun and exciting.

I'm certainly planning to watch!

There was someone on NPR around here who was reading an add for this and kept pronouncing the second "s" on "cosmos" like a "z" so it sounded like she was talking about the cocktail in the plural.

I can't wait to watch that series on my favorite alcoholic beverage! It might seem strange to have more hours of coverage on it, but believe me, there's a lot of depth to this drink.

I'm very happy that they did! It's a good time, because there is so much anti-science out there right now. In addition, they can update the original with some of the new things we have discovered and understood ever since.

I think it's going to be pretty awesome.

I'm... wary about it :-\ For one thing, I'm not a fan of McFarlane, but for another, I'm really concerned about it being on Fox. I mean, I think Tyson is pretty much the perfect choice to host it, and it's still being written by Druyen and Soter, but... Fox. My big concern is how much editorial demand they'd have on it, and if it'd basically have to censor itself in order to get approval from Fox. They don't exactly have a great track record when it comes to science, open inquiry and investigation, and the sheer concept of looking at the evidence instead of blindly following what authority figures and the media tells you to believe!

but... Fox

You mean the network that shows Glee, arguably the gayest current show not on Logo, Sleepy Hollow, the show where two black characters patiently explained to Ichabod Crane that Thomas Jefferson slept with Sally Hemmings, is going to edit Cosmos because they're afraid of conservatives?

You know Fox Network isn't the same as Fox News, right?

Anyway, I watched it. This episode included
1. A man being persecuted by religious people for thinking the universe is infinite, and
2. Open references to evolution as having a lot of evidence behind it.

I think it'll be okay.

They're owned by the same person. Although, in fairness, we don't have Fox, as a station, in Australia. (We do, however, get Fox News - and also basically all of our media is owned by Rupert Murdoch as well, nearly all of which is a) extremely conservative and b) anti-science as hell.)

But yeah, I've been reading hopeful reviews for it, so I'll look it up.

Yes, but Rupert Murdoch only seems to care about this stuff when it suits him.

Look at it this way: science people will love Cosmos. Anti-science people will complain about it on Fox News. Both ways, he wins.

(Also a hell of a lot of conservatives are pro-science, they just end up in the same party as the Ken Ham people because two party systems suck)

Oh god, Ken Ham scares me XD But yeah, it got a good review on the Bad Astronomy blog, so I'll check it out. ...If I can get around the website's US-only region lock. *shakes fist at it*
