Okay, no. Yeah, you could make an argument for them all being the same character archetype, but that's like saying Riku, Cloud, Squall, and Kain are all the same character because they all fall into a "angsty hero" archetype.

Kairi is very different from Yuna who is very different from Aerith who is very different from Rinoa. If you can't see the differences between them, it's because you've decided to hate that archetype to the point that you can't see the characters.

But I kind of feel like that would be valid. I agree that the characters aren't identical but I think they fall under the same archetype.

Yeah, but "same archetype"=/="same character". At least of the characters I recognize here, these girls all have very different personalities. Aerith is a sweet gentle flower seller - who got the tough guy main hero to cross-dress and threatened to tear off a pervert's balls. Kairi is a sweet teenage girl - who teases her friends, ran bravely into the unknown to find said friends on nothing but a hope and a prayer, and leapt off a balcony to defend her friend from monsters with nothing but her fists. Yuna is a sweet soft-spoken summoner - who's dealing with a heritage and a duty that she knows is going to require her to sacrifice her life to save the entire world, but only for a few years before it starts again, and when the quest is over and she didn't die, her personality changes drastically because now she's allowed to HAVE an identity outside of sacrificial lamb.

All three of them can be described and sweet and feminine, but their individual personalities and quirks, not to mention their stories, aren't remotely the same. So this person's opinion is stupid and wrong.

This. And Reimi, the character with a bow, is sweet, but she's also gutsy and intelligent and perceptive enough to recognize when her ship's captain is too emotionally compromised to lead the team, so she takes charge as acting captain instead-- and not a single person in the group protests her doing so. She also spent years hating herself and the power that she had because it kept her alive when so many of her friends died, but eventually she comes to accept that power and be glad that she has it.

Not only that, but combat mechanics-wise, she's not a Staff Chick, she's a powerful long-range fighter and not a healer or a mage at all.

Any characters seem alike if you pare them down to only a few keywords. All female love interests are the same! All brunette magic users are the same! Except they're really not, if you just bother to get to know them.

I think the point was that they are in the same "archetype" but that's a gross simplification of who they are. In fact, it doesn't really explain their characters at all. Cloud, Squall and Kain are nothing alike unless you tried to reduce their personality to maybe three words.

Exactly!
