I like some of them. :/ Sorry, OP.

(Also, I don't see all of them as being exactly the same. Some do have some things in common but...)

I don't think Rinoa is really the same archetype as Agnes and Yuna. Those two lean more self-sacrificing (I'd say messianic if this series wasn't Japanese), and Rinoa's more . . . Actually, what is Rinoa? I'd say she's vaguely spunky, but Selphie in the same game has that locked down. Rinoa's just sort of there a lot.

Rinoa is a rebellious princess. Rich girl who goes against her daddy by running off and helping the people he's [possibly] fighting (the Timber resistance).

I feel this way about damn near all the Lalah/tragic newtype character clones in the Gundam franchise. I like a couple of them and I really liked Lalah, but the rest are terrible. So I can sympathise.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was only super into Gundam Wing, and Quatre was my favorite. I know, apparently that's weird, but I found him just too precious. Is he a "newtype" character? I heard theories about it, because he has some kind of... power, that happens suddenly and without explanation in an episode or two, and it's never explored in the actual show.

Aeris is nothing like the others in terms of personality. Unless you count her awful Crisis Core appearance, which I guess is the art you used but... gah, I always cringed at Aeris being compared to Yuna or Rinoa. Just, no.

Unless you're comparing "special magical girls"? It's kind of an overdone trope, I agree, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with it - it's about personality and portrayal.

Oh man, I liked Crisis Core well enough but her complete personality change was incredibly jarring. I guess you could theorize that Zack's death was so traumatic that it caused her personality to undergo a shift but still, what the fuck?

I suggest you replay some of these games, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
mte. I guess there's something to be said about female "characters" being reused and less thought is put into them or something. But there's also fan bias, and I think female characters are often assumed to be a certain "type" without the fan bothering to get to know them. I don't get what OP is saying is so alike about these women, because they all have different personalities. Damsels in distress? (sort of, iirc they all have to be saved at one point) Magic girls? idk. But they are all different characters, with unique personalities, so I don't understand.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Unrelated, but the proportions of the girl in the upper left are really disturbing me. O_o

She's in a series that also has Mickey Mouse in it. A consistent visual style necessitates some . . . oddities.

Though to some degree they scrap consistency between worlds in favor of consistency within each world, which leads to even BIGGER oddities.

Okay, no. Yeah, you could make an argument for them all being the same character archetype, but that's like saying Riku, Cloud, Squall, and Kain are all the same character because they all fall into a "angsty hero" archetype.

Kairi is very different from Yuna who is very different from Aerith who is very different from Rinoa. If you can't see the differences between them, it's because you've decided to hate that archetype to the point that you can't see the characters.

But I kind of feel like that would be valid. I agree that the characters aren't identical but I think they fall under the same archetype.

Not sure what the point of just picking out that archetype is. Most of those games are made up of really cliche characters. I mean, the entire cast of The Last Hope were cardboard cutouts of characters and at least Reimi wasn't as ear bleedingly annoying as most of the other girls.

I haven't played most of these, but I feel like Agnes, at least, was holding Bravely Default back to some degree. You know you've got a bad female lead when the Everyman hero has a more dynamic and variable personality than she does. (Then again, you could argue that the real female lead is Edea--Agnes is more of a walking plot token.)

Fuck off, Garnet was awesome.

And Yuna wasn't my issue with FFX, even if I didn't really love her until X-2.

Queen Aeris died for your sins.

and she will rip off your balls unless you talk.

your argument is invalid.

All these characters read differently for me. EH. It may be a matter of perspective.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so confused. The only two of these characters I find to be very similar are Yuna and Agnes... (and Rinoa definitely shouldn't be lumped in with them, that's really wrong) Though I will admit to having no idea who that is in the top right.

Do you just mean magically-oriented waifish brunettes, or something? That's an extremely broad category... (and Kairi doesn't even fit into it!)

No Yuel?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Are you joking? Kairi is five million times worse than Yuna. At least Yuna actually had a purpose. It felt like Kairi was just there to pretend like Sora was in love with cared about somebody besides Riku.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of feel like Kairi faired poorly in the sequels. I think she looked worse through the lens of Shion than she did on her own.

kryptoncat: FFIX's Garnet is looking at you. Her hair is short, she's wearing yellow, & she has a peculiar blue stone on a necklace. (DAGGER IS AWESOME AND SO CAN YOU)

I don't want Square to stop making important female characters/ love interests.

I want them to start making this character type better.
