"And because Angel honestly always creeped me out more than Spike - at least Spike is upfront about how much of a loser he is."

Oh, that so much.

I think Angel is a bit of a proto-Edward. Nowhere near as bad, of course, but there is a whole lot of creepiness to the being that much older than her (even just in appearance), especially when they start while she's still in high school (as opposed to Spuffy, which started proper when she was an adult), that gave it an uncomfortable veneer to me, but it's all very sweet and romantic.

Whereas Spike...is supposed to suck. So it kind of works? (Or, doesn't. Buffy just doesn't get nice relationships, really, but in terms of ones I prefer..)

DA

There's also the fact that Angel first saw her when she was in school, sucking on a goddamn lollipop. So fucking creepy. And I like Angel, but good god, he was a creep on Buffy and during his relationship with Buffy. Their whole relationship was skeevy.

At least he didn't almost marry her. The worst relationship in the show for pedo-creepy ended up at the altar before the younger party came to their senses. 1000+ year age difference, history of being abusive, went from "I want to buy beer" to "hey wanna prom date?", then ended up at "hey buy me stuff and marry me you loser". Now that was a truly creepy relationship.

da

I never got the Riley hate. I liked him well enough.

I love Riley. Season 5 fucked him over, but it still like the guy.

I agree he had potential wasted, but I think all the characters kind of did, so he'll never stand out that way for me.

I wasn't a fan of him for the same reason I didn't like Angel: He was too macho guy and feeling the need to protect her. He wanted her to fit into a stereotypical girl role she didn't fit. Though at least Angel understood that she was the Slayer.

For all the creepy of Spuffy, at least he didn't treat her like she was fragile and let her be who she was. He fought beside her, not to protect her.

Mostly, all canon Buffy relationships were problematic, though in different ways.
