[How I Met Your Mother]

Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
By the last episode, if ted or the mother died by the end, I wouldn't be surprised.

"What kind of mother would miss her own daughter's wedding?"

Can I suggest: Ted's kids are imaginary (that's why they've stayed the same age for 5 years) and he is in a mental institution. The rest of the HIMYM are based on other patients and staff in the facility. The 'mother' doesn't exist but is instead a symbol representing his search for meaning in his life.

Ha! This is not going to be, but that would be wonderful. Someone should write this Jack in it (do not trust myself to do so).

Coma or everything a figment of the MC's imagination are least favorite theories.

Right now it really does seem like the show is setting up the mother to be dead.

Which is... kinda weird.

lol. "Hey kids, I'm going to tell you about how I met your deceased mother. But first! Let me tell you years and years worth of unrelated stories about my friends and I having fun in New York and all my other romantic relationships with women who are NOT your mother."

Didn't the older version of the mother speak offscreen in one of the segments with the kids? Like she laughed or made a sarcastic remark?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The theory that the mother is dead has been a favorite theory for a long time. The last episode had a lot of hints at that. Of course, that could just be the writers messing with everyone.

By now, I don't even care.

I only tune in to watch Robin and Barney snark at each other.

Et tu, Enter buttonus?

From what I remember of the first episode - keeping in mind I only ever watched that - the kids' response to their Dad saying he wanted to tell them everything was basically "oh Dad, come on, not THIS again" which to me does not imply a sad scenario. Otherwise, wouldn't they be humbled? Plus, isn't this a comedy? That seems like such a dark ending for a comedy.

It's interesting that you say this, because the mother's actress very recently gave an interview where she talked about how she thought the theory that her character would die was insane and that they wouldn't end the show on a dark note. Of course I suppose she could be deliberately misleading people. I guess we shall find out!

My guess is that Ted's mom dies. Ted seems the kind of guy who would tear up at the idea of his mother not being at his wedding, even years past... but I also think that it's the reason why he keeps telling stories. His parents were never good at sharing with him... whether it be them splitting up, or Grandma dying.

I think Ted's mom has a serious condition that she has kept quiet from everyone, thus why she wanted to live her life to the fullest (getting remarried and whatnot). Ted finds out, and fulfills his promise that he would tell his children everything.

I've said it before, but my pet theory from the get-go is that after he finishes his story, the camera does a 360 pan, y'know, circles from his kids to old-him and back around to...an empty couch. Because he never did meet the right woman, and he never did have children, and they're just a story he's telling himself about what could have been.

Normally I like dark stuff but for some reason this thread is really depressing to me.

[personal profile] lizwis 2014-03-11 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the show at its best, and went somewhere between tolerating it to finding it mildly amusing at its worst. I can't imagine enjoying any other ending than a shocking one.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
We'll all find out at the end of March when the show ends, I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I really thought that "What kind of mother would miss her own daughter's wedding?" meant that Ted or the Mother's mom died so she missed Ted/TheMother's wedding.

Now I'm scared that you guys are right.

Eh. I think the whole "the Mother is dead" is a red herring.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would make more sense if Ted was the one who was dead. And he recorded hundreds of dvds for his kids to watch as they grew up because he knew he wouldn't be there for them. And maybe he talked about all the women he dated/adventures he had before he met their mother because he knew the mother would tell them everything that happened after they met.

I don't think they would but I'd love it if they did. Mostly cause I am suffering from 'will it end already!'

(Anonymous) 2014-03-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds lovely! I'd root for those ideas. But unfo, in our dreams.
