I've said it before, but my pet theory from the get-go is that after he finishes his story, the camera does a 360 pan, y'know, circles from his kids to old-him and back around to...an empty couch. Because he never did meet the right woman, and he never did have children, and they're just a story he's telling himself about what could have been.

eh, they already did something similar with Robin for an episode (although she did go on to lead a successful life)

Didn't they do something similar with Roseanne's ending?

Sort of. Roseanne actually had a family and everything like that, it just turned out that the events in the series were being told in a story by Roseanne and she changed certain events around (for example, instead of surviving his heart attack in season 8, Dan really died and the family never actually won the lottery like they did in one episode)
