I see it as a big brother and little sister relationship and don't think the show has suggested otherwise (at least yet). Daryl is bad with emotions; he's awkward and self-conscious and he's never had a 'normal', loving family, so he hasn't had too much experience with people being kind or caring. He's not sure how to react, and he's not confident with allowing himself to be vulnerable around people, and that's what's happening with Beth; he's only just getting to know her and they're connecting, but that doesn't have to be a romantic thing.

I mean, if you ship it you ship it, that's fine, I just don't know if the show would go there or is even suggesting that. It would startle me if they did hook up because Daryl is not the romantic type. At least for me, it would feel forced. (And I say this as someone who is majorly into Daryl/Carol, who loves their relationship, thinks they're wonderful for each other and their scenes are some of the best in the series, but I couldn't see that pairing happening in canon either. Daryl in ANY romantic relationship would feel off for me, but especially so with anyone who he hasn't had tons and tons of screentime, interaction and history with.) Right now I think we're seeing that the group is his surrogate family and this is the first time he's had major one on one time with Beth, and yes, he's growing attached to her (and he's learning to lean on her and work with her), but not necessarily in a romantic way.

Then again...the show could surprise me, but I just don't know.

As for the age difference...eh, I can see why it might weird some people out and I do get why it might be an issue with this pairing, but most the time I can work with age differences*. In this case it could be seen as unsettling because of the power difference between the two characters and the fact that Daryl really is acting like a sort of big brother to Beth, but again...this is fandom, that's someones kink for sure. If it doesn't bother you it doesn't bother you.

(An example being TW, but since the show itself doesn't seem to give a shit about age differences and the cast don't actually look anything like teens, it doesn't bother me too much. However, Beth's actress looks about 16 to me so maybe that adds to the discomfort?)

Oh, yeah, Daryl in a romantic relationship RIGHT NOW? No fucking way. I get that the characters are progressing and shit, but even I would admit him completely falling in love in three episodes would be sketchy as fuck. Like, what happened to Daryl and who is this person pretending to be him?

I probably should have put emphasis on EVER in the secret, because I do not expect Beth and Daryl to get together in the near future, much less before Season 5 ends. I just think the writers are setting up the potential for something MORE there, possibly, if they want to go in that direction, and if they do, it needs to be a really slooow burn. Their relationship doesn't ever NEED to be romantic, it could stay friendly and I'd be happy, but I'd be hella confused because I've been picking up on romantic signals. Maybe my radar's on the fritz, but I'm just seeing some serious possibility there, especially last episode, and it REALLY SEEMS like the writers put it there on purpose. Like I said, if I'm interpreting it wrong, I don't think I'm the one that fucked up.

And I'm just never gonna see them as brother/sister. I have two older brothers who I am really close with, basically attached at the hip and super touchy-feely, and even we don't act like Daryl and Beth have been. Especially the last scene between them. Almost every time Daryl opens up in any way (or someone opens up to him), he plays it off with a joke or dismisses it. But this time he was pretty shy and sincere about it, and maybe it's just them showing that Daryl's opening up more, but it seemed really romantic to me, especially that long-ass stare and the little "oh." LIKE IF MY BROTHERS EVER LOOKED AT ME LIKE THAT I'D BE REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE, JUST SAYING.

(It's hilarious how young Emily looks. YOU'RE TWENTY SEVEN, WHAT FUCKING YOUTH SERUM HAVE YOU BEEN DRINKING.)

Thanks for commenting though! It's interesting to see other peoples' opinions on this.

It's not just you picking up on it, but this is just one of those things...either you see it or you don't. I don't see it, at all, but there's obviously plenty of folks who do, so we're just taking different things away from their scenes together. Daryl has been shy and awkward and affectionate with Carol too and plenty of people don't think there's anything between them either, so again, I guess it's just a matter of perspective.

I'm not sure I could ever imagine Daryl in a romantic relationship, but I agree that if it was going to happen it wouldn't be now. Daryl is exactly the type of person who I think would need a slow burn romance.

You aren't imagining those romantic signals. His sheepish confession that she restored some of his faith in humanity felt very romantic.

She's 27? Wow.

You are a brother and sister relationship romance in progress, however; see weinsist! It is not surprising.
