Well, OP did you see last night's episode? I expect it made you happy.

I should probably be skeeved a bit, but I ain't. They're darn cute together, and the last couple eps have been pretty shippy if anyone was looking for fodder. Also, I'm seriously digging the bundles of characters that don't normally interact with each other too.

Also, why does it have to get ship warry. I just want to main Caryl and have my Bethyl (Darth? wtf is the name for this?) on the side.

I am digging this ship so much, ngl. I'm weirded out by the age gap too (which makes me a ginormous hypocrite considering some of my slash ships) but man, after last night night's episde. ;3;

I REALLY don't want it to happen

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing against anyone shipping it. Hell if you even wanted to write/read erotic fan fiction about them, I wouldn't give two shits.

But I REALLY don't want it to become canon.
Because A. As you mentioned, the age difference
B. I think their should be more platonic male/female relationships in television
C. Their whole dynamic is something that, in my opinion, would not led itself to a non-platonic relationship. The have a power imbalance thing going on. Daryl is pretty cemented into a 'caregiver' role in their relationship (teaches her how to drink alcohol, teaches her how to crossbow, cares for her injuries) and at this point, it does not go both ways. Sure she's 18, but in the context of their relationship, she is definitely NOT an 'adult' If they actually got together, it would be MASSIVELY Squicky.

Within the show, I agree with not wanting to see it happen, and have it be a bro-sis or awesome friendship.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
See, I get what you're saying with point B. I love male/female brotps and I really wish there were more on TV, but I just can't see these two that way. Like, my friends are saying it's platonic, but I have been trying really hard to see it that way for their sake and I just can't. And don't even get me started on the "like brother/sister" bullshit. I've seen fucking incest ships with less subtext than this.

And in real life I'd be with you on C, but since this is fiction it doesn't have to go that way. I don't see Daryl as her caregiver at all anymore. Maybe back in 4x10, but they've progressed pretty damn far since then, and they really seem to be viewing each other more like equals now. I think their drunk fight really cemented it for me that Beth isn't afraid of him and isn't going to put up with his shit. IDK about you, but if my dad or older brother blew up at me like that, I would be off pissing myself in the corner, waiting for it to be over, and I'm not normally scared of either of them. No way would I react like Beth did unless I knew I was on equal footing with the person. Even when he was tugging her around and manhandling her (which was so fucking wrong, btw, but I think most of us agree that he fucked up), Beth didn't seem scared, just frustrated. If he hurt her or if she reacted in a more passive way, I'd have a much different opinion about this, but as it stands, I see them as equals and I believe they view each other that way too.
(I also understand the whole "teacher" thing too, but IDK, you can teach someone something at any age, so I don't see it the same way.)
(And I agree that 18 =/= adult, but I do see her as a young adult, maturity wise. Shit, most of the young adults I know are total fuck-ups that aren't half as mature as Beth. I think the apocalypse would age most of us in a way.)

There's a lot of things that made me wary about this ship, but if the writers keep handling it the way they are, I'm defiantly on board with this.

Re: I REALLY don't want it to happen

Regarding C, in this case is Beth the one who has more power in this relationship. She had had boyfriends before and a caring family. She has loved and be loved. Daryl, on the other hand, never had any girlfriend or any close relationship. He is the most inexperienced here.

all of this. so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, the media is having a goddamn feeding frenzy and it's seriously harshing my enjoyment....

I see it as a big brother and little sister relationship and don't think the show has suggested otherwise (at least yet). Daryl is bad with emotions; he's awkward and self-conscious and he's never had a 'normal', loving family, so he hasn't had too much experience with people being kind or caring. He's not sure how to react, and he's not confident with allowing himself to be vulnerable around people, and that's what's happening with Beth; he's only just getting to know her and they're connecting, but that doesn't have to be a romantic thing.

I mean, if you ship it you ship it, that's fine, I just don't know if the show would go there or is even suggesting that. It would startle me if they did hook up because Daryl is not the romantic type. At least for me, it would feel forced. (And I say this as someone who is majorly into Daryl/Carol, who loves their relationship, thinks they're wonderful for each other and their scenes are some of the best in the series, but I couldn't see that pairing happening in canon either. Daryl in ANY romantic relationship would feel off for me, but especially so with anyone who he hasn't had tons and tons of screentime, interaction and history with.) Right now I think we're seeing that the group is his surrogate family and this is the first time he's had major one on one time with Beth, and yes, he's growing attached to her (and he's learning to lean on her and work with her), but not necessarily in a romantic way.

Then again...the show could surprise me, but I just don't know.

As for the age difference...eh, I can see why it might weird some people out and I do get why it might be an issue with this pairing, but most the time I can work with age differences*. In this case it could be seen as unsettling because of the power difference between the two characters and the fact that Daryl really is acting like a sort of big brother to Beth, but again...this is fandom, that's someones kink for sure. If it doesn't bother you it doesn't bother you.

(An example being TW, but since the show itself doesn't seem to give a shit about age differences and the cast don't actually look anything like teens, it doesn't bother me too much. However, Beth's actress looks about 16 to me so maybe that adds to the discomfort?)

People shipping Carol and Daryl and thinking that it would happen had their straight goggles on way too tight. They were just friends who cared a lot about each other, but that was all. There was no romantic subtext, no sexual tension. Nothing. People only thought there was something going on because "a man and a woman with a deep relationship, they want to fuck".

I'm so fucking happy that the new episode proved them wrong.

OP, ship what you want to ship. I hope you and your Caryl friends can respect each other's preferences.

Now, for what I want to happen: I don't ship it but I like their dynamics and would like it to remain a friendship.

As to what I *think* it's happening: after that moment they were having when the door interrupted them, I now think it's platonic on Beth's part but that Daryl is at least considering it. I wonder if I'm the only one who picked up on that? I really wonder what her eye expressions and "no" meant.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why anyone could find 4x12 remotely "romantic".

What's "romantic" about Daryl getting drunk and violent, manhandling Beth, and putting them in danger?

But, hey! If that's your idea of "twue wub", go ahead!

It's a 100% nope for me.

They'd make a great platonic/familial relationship but it did feel so intimate I thought I was crazy and was surprised to see them discuss it on ttd.
I do not want them at all, don't care if it's partly because I ship Caryl.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Reedus always says that he wants romance with Daryl to be earned and right now I feel like the media is rushing that more than the show itself. It's like they got ahold of the concept of shipping and are losing their minds over the dumbest shit. Two episodes and suddenly this extremely damaged man who's clearly grossly uncomfortable with intimacy of any kind is making eyes at someone he's seen as a child for 97% of the time they've known each other...? Bullshit.

Holding someone's hand at a graveyard and forming a relationship doesn't and shouldn't always mean sex, and so idk why every single article has to go on and on about it. Just... Let it play out without shoving it down our throats, good god.

...Also this episode played out like a tween's self-insert fic to me (which is fine in fic, have at it, fandom) but on screen and it just felt forced imo. For me personally this is a case of other people's reactions seriously messing with my ability to enjoy the show and I'm... Not pleased about it.

That said I do really enjoy Beth's development and I love the idea of them getting closer in a bro/sis way, because Daryl getting to be the kind of big brother Merle wasn't is something I desperately need in my life. And because I feel like it needs to be said, I'm also a platonic Caryl shipper. I am just not here for Daryl romance any time soon period.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-11 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Norman Reedus doesn't have absolute control over Daryl or anything, but he's stated in interviews that he doesn't see Daryl as being even remotely cool or capable with ANY of the ladies. When people were talking about him hooking up with Carol, he said he wouldn't mind it eventually, but that hoped it would be really subtle long-simmering because he saw Daryl as being awkward as shit, and basically terrified of any chick that made a move on him.

OMG! Yay! Walking Dead secret!

I posted about last night's episode on Tumblr and several Caryl fans jumped on my back about it. I started out shipping Caryl and I'm going to end shipping Caryl. However, it doesn't mean that I can't acknowledge that Daryl can have feelings for more than one person. Carol is the fucking queen, but Beth is not all bad either.

This entire season has been about character growth and I'm happy to see the new developments. You know, even though I would have been interested in a bit of Daryl/Michonne action, since I didn't get any Reformed!Meryl/Michonne.
