Do you mean that 'very few' Western anime fans actually pay for anime? I think that's a little ungenerous...

Think they mean very few westerners directly support the industry directly and importin their anime from Japan. Which I can't say I blame them for not doing since those prices are fucking ridiculous.

Yeah, my first thought was importing or companies like Aniplex. It's great they're trying to bring it directly from Japan, but those prices are steep. It's the reason I don't own the new Gurren Lagann set yet, even though I plan to save up.

Those prices are just ridiculous and it is no wonder that the industry panders to otaku since they're damn near the only ones foolish enough and guaranteed to pay those prices.

Yeah, I got super excited when I heard that GL was getting re-released, but then I found out it was Aniplex and I knew it'd be a long time before I could get my hands on it. The people who managed it for the Madoka series AND movies blow my mind, which was when I first found out about how high the pricing was.

Aniplex is way too rich for my blood, which is a shame because there's quite a few series from them I'd love to get. But those prices aren't worth it. Even for Gurren Lagann which like you I was hoping to get my hands on.

High-five for that, nonny. I'm mostly hoping to catch it during a sale, since Rightstuf sometimes discounts their stuff if it's big enough. It's how I've been getting by with Sentai pricing when they license something I really enjoyed.

:3 god, I wish aniplex would release a barebones boxset or a set with only a few extras that won't break my fucking wallet. Maybe try during RightStuf's Christmas sales?

Ugh, same. I do stalk the Christmas sales, but from what I remember GL wasn't on there during the last one. Soon, hopefully!

Ahh, okay. I thought it was like "Western anime fans just pirate everything."

(The whole secret is a dumb complaint anyway, as other people have pointed out, I was just trying to sort out what they meant.)
