Vikings continues to look really cool and have great fight scenes, but uneven writing and pacing.

Dammit, show.

Oh, agreed. I loved Vikings in theory - even the main characters were somehow awesome to me. But the writing is so horrible... it doesn't make sense, and the dialogue is cringe-worthy. I am on this show's side, so please become better!

I'm giving them time to grow the beard. Have faith, anon! They will get better!

Who's your favorite character? I liked Athelstan last season, but I'm not sure about now. His motivations aren't really clear to me.

Athelstan was fucking adorable. Before the random "sacrifice" episode where he had a beard, and... weirdness happened. Sooo ship him in a threesome with Ragnar and Lagertha. Unfortunately, I don't really understand his character - as you said, his motivations aren't clear, nor is Ragnar's interest in him at this point.

Lagertha was my favorite.

Oh, he was such a cutie in the first season. And yes, OT3.

According to the previews, Lagertha is in the next episode. Which is good, because she is faaaaaaar more interesting than Aslaug.

I was very >:( about not getting any sort of gradual development of Athelstan's character. He fights now? He's all broody now?
And why the hell did Rollo's big betrayal fight end so abruptly? WHAT IS THIS TSUNDERE ROLLO WHAT

Forgot to add that I still love the show to bits and will keep on watching until the end, dammit. But man do I have some frustrations.

I agree. The show doesn't really make sense, especially with certain characters. The dialogue isn't strong enough to justify it, and the plot doesn't explain it.

But... I still love the show. it's like, my favorite current running tv series atm. XD

I'm just relieved to hear Athelstan's in it at all. All the promotional images I've seen don't have him pictured.

This is a good point. On they facebook they were really pushing Floki and Athelstan was missing from the group shots I saw. YOU HAD ME WORRIED, SHOW.

I just wish Vikings wasn't all over the place. I hate that something huge happens and next episode months have passed and things that should be discussed get tossed to side and forgotten. (Like Lagertha's miscarriage, and Athelstan's near sacrifice.)

It's not a terrible show, but it could be so much better too.

AGREED SFM. I love the characters so dearly. But I cannot stand the time skips and bizarre pacing.

"Where are we? What happened? When did you grow a beard? Are we going to have any build up to this next event? No? You're just going to kill that potentially cool secondary character? We're just going to skip ahead umpty ump years? Cool beans."

IA, Vikings has some cool characters but there's an insane amount of wasted potential for character development and cool story lines because of how fast the show moves. It would be nice if we could see the characters react more often, or react in a timely manner, not months after the fact. I would be much happier with the show if there were fewer time skips.

The writer's a former historian. I think that might have something to do with it. Given a patchy historical record, he'll be used to time skips and characters changing dramatically depending on which sources are used.

In fiction, those faults are not so acceptable.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. That show is the epitome of good idea...nonexistent execution.

Example: I expected the Rollo Rebellion to take up the entire season. Instead, it's over in one episode.

Right? I figured that would take up a huge part of the season (I should have known better); I'm disappointed that its already over. What a waste.

Your icon displays my feelings perfectly. That's what they were leading up to at the end of the first season; this huge, drawn out, emotionally gut-wrenching war between Cain and Abel.

I feel like singing that Adele song. We could have had it aaaaaall.

lol, that icon in combination with Rolling in the Deep expresses my feelings on so many shows I watch. Very few of them aren't pretty fucked up in some way, but it's extra sad with Vikings because unlike some of the others, there's an excellent base to build on, TPTB just go about things wrong.

the buildup and fallout of "Sacrifice" could have been an entire arc: one episode. The plague that wiped out several major characters: less than one episode. The coming-of-age of the boy who will become one of the most important characters: skipped entirely. Yeah.

Oh, that plague. Y'know what really bugged me about that plague? They killed off female characters. Two young women who were a lot more compelling and interesting and had a lot more potential than Aslaug.
