I was thinking of writing almost this exact comment. Except I didn't even bother with the 50th anniversary. I keep meaning to watch it and the Christmas special at some point but I can't seem to dredge up enough enthusiasm for Doctor Who right now. I'm curious about 12 so I might check out the new season when it starts but I don't have high hopes.

And Korra is just so disappointing. I adore A:TLA and I wanted to love Korra but it wasted so much potential.

Honestly, I only watched the 50th because my Mum was watching it. If she hadn't, I wouldn't have bothered, and vastly preferred An Adventure in Space and Time.

Korra is upsetting. I was watching a few clips from AtLA the other day and just... it was fantastic. How did they go so wrong? :(

At this point in time, I'm convinced that ATLA was a fluke and that Korra is the result of all the praise and accolades getting to their heads.

That's actually closer to the truth than you'd think. I know I asked how it went so wrong, but I can actually give a good guess - AtLA had multiple writers and multiple directors. Korra is written ENTIRELY by Bryke without any major input from others, so there's no way to check their ideas. If Bryke had written AtLA in its entirety, we wouldn't have Toph!

Ayrt

So, Korra is entirely written by Bryke? Well, that makes so much fucking sense then. He had no one to rein him in and edit/fix some of his shittier developments. No wonder Korra was garbage.

Well, Bryke is two people - Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino - but yeah, basically. They're superb as creators, I won't deny that, and they did create the entire world, mythos, everything that people love so much. But they're kind of questionable as writers - not great with keeping characters and storylines well-rounded and actually consistent. Just look at how poor Bolin devolves from the start of Korra to book two!

Did they want to exclude Toph? My word, Toph is AWESOME.

Not in so many words, but they originally designed Toph to be a big, crude, tough-talking, muscular dude (think how Toph appears in Ember Island Players, basically!). IIRC, the head writer, Aaron Ehasz, was the one that suggested she be a young girl, which Konietzko rejected. They eventually changed their mind and did go with the Toph we know today (and she ended up as Konietzko's favourite character).

I think I've heard that before, now that you mention it. Damn, I'm glad they went the way they did with her!

So basically it's like Star Wars. You get an accidental masterpiece as a result of the input of multiple people, it gets successful, then you get a follow-up done by the main people in charge with no one to tell them what parts suck and everything goes downhill from there.

Yeah, basically! ...Man, add the new movies to the List Of Things I'm Really Not Sure About...

Yep, I did a scrub through of all my favorite ATLA episodes a couple months ago and I realized that most of my favorite eps in ATLA were actually written by the husband/wife team of Aaron and Elizabeth Welch Ehasz, not Bryke.

The Storm, Siege of the North, Zuko Alone, The Crossroads of Destiny, The Avatar and the Firelord...

And two of the best character development episodes, Bitter Work and The Southern Raiders were their creations as well.

Explained so much about Korra once I realized.

And because of Aaron Ehasz, we have Toph. Fuck, give THEM the chance to write Korra instead!

Re: Canon Rant Thread

Oh wow. I knew Bryke originally planned for Toph (as well as Azula) to be a dude and it was one of the other writers who changed their minds, but I didn't know that was Ehasz's influence as well.

Man, seriously.

I still don't think I'd support one team or the other though. I remember when Moffat first took over Doctor Who, I was so excited because (minus Girl In the Fireplace) I loved his episodes. But when he was unleashed those ideas just ran everywhere plot cohesion and pacing be damned.

But yeah, still use Bryke as the raw ore and just let the Ehasz's be the refinery process. Oh, if only.

...Good point. Refining would be a good plan!

And huh, didn't know Azula was intended to be a guy.

Yeah, I'm doing a quick google search now, and can't find anything at the moment, but I could've swore I read or heard it in an interview somewhere.

Really ought to go to bed now, but if I find it I'll let you know.

Thanks :) Azula is a fascinating character.
