But Voyager was Star Trek. Yes, Deep Space Nine was awesome when it went outside the mold, but that doesn't mean that going back to traditional Star Trek was a bad thing. I don't understand the hate Voyager gets, at least not to the level it does, when Next Generation doesn't get the same hate. And both were shows that stuck to the things that made Star Trek what it was.

Love it or hate it, they are both set in the Star Trek universe. Deep Space Nine showed some of the underbelly of that universe, but it still had a lot of the same things.

ayrt

don't get me wrong, I don't hate Voyager: I just thought it was so dissapointing that they gave it this cool and interesting concept (stranded light-years away from home) and then didn't really do anything with it. The essential optimism and professionalism was Star Trek, but what I always loved was the "To boldly go", the drive to go out and explore--whereas the primary precept of Voyager was returning home. IF they had kept the Star Trek atmosphere but adapted it to the setting--okay, maybe the ship is becoming patchy and jerry-rigged and a bit grubby, maybe we're moving away from the formal uniform to something more adapted to energy conservation, and maybe interpersonal relationships have to change because we're a community now more than just coworkers, but we can still be professionals dammit! Our ultimate goal may be Earth, but our primary focus is the joy of exploring a whole new area of space (it's about the journey more than the destination)--that was what I was really wanting from the beginning and I was sad to see never explored. (some of the tie-in novels did better, I thought....)

Just jumping in to say I love this concept, and thanks for sharing it!

Not going to agree with you on that. The costuming choices for Seven were irritating and problematic, but her actual character was interesting.

She was bland and boring and only got her job because she was sleeping with one of the executive producers.

Pretty sure she didn't start going out with the guy until much later on, while she was getting out of a bad marriage. So...no.
