Cry all you want, my otaku siblings, but it's true. We pirate too much and support too little. I think there is--or will be--a growing base of homegrown anime in the Americas and Europe. It might even become mainstream is we support it properly. However, don't ever expect Japan to cater to Western tastes. It usually backfires on them, even when they do it well.

Eh, the industry can't survive on otaku money alone for much longer. It'll collapse eventually especially in the state it is in.

The Kickstarter scene has gotten some attention. It'll be interesting to see where that goes.

There's a distinction between expecting things to be a certain way or demanding something, and disliking something and wishing it was another way. You're definitely right that it is unlikely that Japanese companies will cater to Western tastes, and it does seem that for a lot of reasons, it doesn't make economic sense for them to do so. But that doesn't mean that I have to like the anime that they're producing, or that I can't wish they would make other, good anime. That's why OP's position is garbage - it boils down to the argument that unless you're in the target demographic and stuff you like is profitable, it's unreasonable to want things you like. This is totally absurd, and I strongly doubt that OP would accept the argument, in general, that you can't criticize anything unless you're in the target demographic!
