I was sad when she lost, too.

"I didn't lose the gold, I won the silver" - Michelle Kwan

I think that ladies figure skating in the US hasn't been the same since Michelle Kwan's heyday for sure because we haven't had a lady as dominant as she was.

But idk. Like looking at Yuna Kim or Mao Asada over the past several years... idk. I don't think the sport is dead at all. I think there's still a lot of good left in it.

Both Yuna Kim and Mao Asada are retiring from competitive skating, though. Now that there aren't as many professional competitions or tours, that's likely to mean we won't be seeing them unless it's in a coaching or commentator position. :(

MAO MIGHT NOT BEEEEEEEEEEEE

I mean, she still might be, but she said some things after the Olympics that indicated she might continue to compete.

Oh! I hadn't heard, that gives me hope. :)

The 50-50 comment? Yeah, I'd be thrilled if it's true, but I'm wary about being too hopeful.

Yuna Kim hasn't looked like she's still enjoying skating for years though, so I won't be surprised if she stays retired.

Honestly I think the only thing that could keep Yuna from retiring is major pressure from her skating federation. Sadly part of me thinks I will end up seeing her obviously miserable from being forced to compete come 2018.

I still can't believe we haven't won a women's world medal since 2006. It hurtssss.

lol well

Racist Gracie Gold has an outside shot at the bronze at worlds this year, I think.

But I won't be cheering about that.

I hope that Polina Edmunds develops over the next couple of years because I actually think she has a lot of potential.

lol there's that yeah. I'm not crazy about her skating either. It's... fine, but it doesn't grab me.

I also like Polina!

I hate to be dramatic but...after this year's Games, I don't know how much longer I'll be interested. Russia greased their way to gold. I know Kim is so exhausted at this point she doesn't give a shit, but that whole experience made me feel dirty. And Sotnikova's not even going to be at Worlds! She's not retiring, why isn't she going to be at Worlds? Oh right--because her Federation doesn't want her to lose in front of a non-Russian panel. Then the IOC released "quotes" by Kim praising Sotnikova, saying she deserved to win and she was the better skater--and it turned out these were MADE UP quotes, that Kim hadn't given this interview. Gross, gross, gross. I'm used to disagreeing with the results (I def wanted Michelle to win but at least Tara skated her ass off and made no errors, ditto Sarah Hughes). I'm not used to feeling quite this disgusted with the sport.

I'm more grossed out by the Korean fanbase's response to the whole ordeal. Nothing classier than brutally attacking a 17 year old girl who had nothing to do with the rigging.

SA

That is also appalling. Surely she is a victim as well, since there will always be questions about her victory. In fact the one thing I liked about this debacle was her upending of the Russian federation's plans to shaft her--it is obvious Yulia was the Chosen One since Adelina didn't even get to skate in the team event. I imagine it gave her a lot of pride to give the Russian fed the middle finger the way she did.

Both are disgusting. I just don't know if I can even be bothered to invest myself in a sport where the manipulation is that obvious. I thought we'd left that behind after the judging scandal of Salt Lake City. Shit like this just curdles interest in the sport.

Nah I think cutting figures was a good thing. We don't need more Anett Pötzschs.

But I do agree that the new scoring system has hindered a lot of what makes the sport really beautiful. Damn do I miss good spiral sequences, and damn am I tired of ugly catchfoots. Even excellent and gorgeous skaters like Yuna Kim and Mao Asada I honestly feel are hindered a bit by it.

It is weird to me that you'd call it the sport's last shining moment though when it wasn't even Michelle Kwan's last shining moment. Her performances at worlds in 2000, 2001, and 2003, were absolute perfection. 2001 especially. Damn. They all three surpassed her Nagano skate, I feel (she wuz still robbed there though).

I wish there were a way to reward figures without them making the difference in placement. I totally agree, no more Annett Pötzschs or Trixi Schubas, but they were an important element in the sport.

And I miss spiral sequences too...nothing like a nice Charlotte spiral...

I do miss the 6.0 system and the programs that goes with it, but some skaters can adapt well from the old judging system to the new one and still produce heartbreakingly beautiful programs. By 'some skaters' I mean Takahashi Daisuke. It's him and Asada Mao and Suzuki Akiko that can still drive me to tears.

But they're all retiring after this year's Worlds, so there's that...
