I think you missed the point when she was talking about herself being passed by to host. It was within the larger context saying that there were plenty of authors within the community that had volunteered to host or co-host, and instead they chose a person from outside the community and who they would have to pay. She wasn't just randomly whining about not being chosen to host.

Though apparently he was doing it for free, according to this.

Ah, interesting! I had missed that bit. The articles I was reading at the time all spoke of him being a paid host.

I love Dara. That is all.

Oh, you and your facts.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
not many facts in that post - he's certainly not an outsider in the British sci-fi scene and was hosting for free

I agree that OP's post is missing a lot of context. But a minor quibble - he's not outside the community.

Ross is a comics geek and author, which sounds very "inside the community" to me. Granted, it's not what he's most famous for, but what he's most famous for is presenting shows... pretty much the same job he was asked to do and decided to volunteer his time for.

Jonathan Ross and Jane Goldman are both well inside the "community", especially in the UK where these awards are taking place and where his style and humour would barely raise an eyebrow, though he's apparently outside the pale for the self-appointed, more-pious-than-thou SJW police for whom telling people to step on lego is the very acme of wit. Is there any chance they could all fuck off to a special island and stay there forever accusing each other of minor thought infractions and leave the rest of us to it? They cause a damn sight more problems than they ever solve with their nasty, self-righteous pissing contests.

British person here! His style and humour certainly do raise eyebrows over here, popular does not mean universally liked.

That tweet sounded like a mix of sour grapes and a slightly desperate job application to me.

I fail to see how Ross is outside the community...
