You are supremely over simplifying a pretty big protest with sound reasons and making it sound like it was only one author with only one concern for why he shouldn't host. It's a lot more than that.

It was a pretty big stupid protest

Which was stupid. They got that part right.

Sound reasons like certain committee members getting the hump because the decision to invite him was made without their blessing and thus deciding to pull the rug from under the appointment of a knowledgeable, sympathetic and high profile host in a fit of pique? Just another day in self-sabotaging fandom. But hey, at least you all won't be subjected to an omg! mainstream host now. Enjoy whichever no-mark you get instead.

I have no idea who these people are but I agree. We're thought-policing now?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP of the secret is sort of glossing over the fact that all the reasons I heard for people being pissed about him were to do with the fact that he is frequently sexist and gross on his talk show.

I think you missed the point when she was talking about herself being passed by to host. It was within the larger context saying that there were plenty of authors within the community that had volunteered to host or co-host, and instead they chose a person from outside the community and who they would have to pay. She wasn't just randomly whining about not being chosen to host.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Though apparently he was doing it for free, according to this.

I agree that OP's post is missing a lot of context. But a minor quibble - he's not outside the community.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ross is a comics geek and author, which sounds very "inside the community" to me. Granted, it's not what he's most famous for, but what he's most famous for is presenting shows... pretty much the same job he was asked to do and decided to volunteer his time for.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Jonathan Ross and Jane Goldman are both well inside the "community", especially in the UK where these awards are taking place and where his style and humour would barely raise an eyebrow, though he's apparently outside the pale for the self-appointed, more-pious-than-thou SJW police for whom telling people to step on lego is the very acme of wit. Is there any chance they could all fuck off to a special island and stay there forever accusing each other of minor thought infractions and leave the rest of us to it? They cause a damn sight more problems than they ever solve with their nasty, self-righteous pissing contests.

Haven't heard the wank, but by the secret, I'm guessing she's someone who complained Jonathon Ross might fat shame, when yes, he and Jane Goldman are both medically obese by UK standards, so it's not likely. (At least I know I'm obese at UK size 14 and 5 foot 6, so they have to be, at least sometimes.)

I've stopped watching Ross's chat show after he was inappropriate to one female guest too many times. He forgets he's not in his own living room. But I'll still watch his geek coverage. The man is a proper fanboy and knows his stuff.

Oh, he withdrew from hosting the awards.

Comment from Dara O'Briain: "I think he got chased out by people who were being pious and complaining about jokes that he wasn't even making - or hasn't made nor has ever made.... I thought he did the elegant thing. Also he was doing it for free as a favour."

She was also one of many people who made a comment and she's being used as the torch to light the way, which is a damn shame. She also made that comment /after/ he had stepped down as host. I wish people wouldn't use her as the scapegoat for the whole mess.

Why does she get so much blame? She didn't even comment until he'd already offered to step down from the backlash.

I think the overreaction to him being named the host was ridiculous, but it's also ridiculous to keep blaming her, when most of her comments came at the tail end of the situation and after he'd already stepped down.

All I can think after reading all the details people are giving, for both sides, in the comments is that you're a dick for boiling it down to Seanan McGuire being "afraid" of fat jokes.

I don't know who any of these people are, but I definitely agree it's wrong to rant about someone based on what they *might* do. That's just idiotic and a sign that you don't have a valid argument based in reality.

I also think it's ridiculous to get butthurt over who hosts an awards ceremony. When Seth MacFarlane got picked to host the Oscars my sister was far from pleased because she doesn't like him (thinks he's misogynistic). But oddly enough she did not rant and rail, or scream and cry on twitter or tumblr or anywhere else about the injustice of it all and what he might say. She decided she wanted to watch the show enough that she'd give him the benefit of the doubt. She still didn't like him, but she had something called perspective about the situation. If you want to see the show more than you hate the host, watch it. Otherwise, don't. It's really quite simple.

Uh, well:

1) She didn't campaign, she complained about it at her personal twitter account after he had already agreed to step down;
2) Regardless of his weight or his wife's, he has in the past made jokes that are offensive to women and it's ok to not be comfortable with that;
3) She was pointing out that there were other more suitable hosts around, NOT that she was the natural alternative;
4) How is a Hugo-winning (and multiple times nominated) author obscure when it comes to the Hugos?

So apart from the complete factual innacuracy, great secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, who are either of them? And who cares who "hosts" anyway? Who cares about awards shows? Blah. I hate it when my industry (sci-fi, I'm a writer) simplifies what we do down to celebrities and personalities JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.
