I think the most lulzy part of the whole thing was Neil Gaiman removing his Hugo nominee pin. That showed 'em!

Showed he's just another Boys' Clubber, sure.

He's a man who sticks up for his friends. Male friends, female friends, fat and skinny and muscly friends. That's what people do.

I'm curious. If one of your best friends just lost a cool job because people thought he/she was an asshole and a fake geek, what would you do?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Not that, certainly.

Tell them to consider working on their public presentation a little, because if that many people think they're an asshole and that's not the image they're trying to project, they're cocking it up somewhere.

I got nothing for the fake geek thing, that entire mentality's bullshit.

Gaiman's got a valid reason to be disappointed even if you think that was a dumb way to express it. He recommended a good friend for a job that he thought the friend would like and do well in, and circumstances beyond his control resulted in the public humiliation of his friend AND his friend's family. On top of all that, his friend loses the job, also in a very public manner, and has to bow out gracefully even though all he actually did was agree to host a ceremony.

If I were Gaiman, wearing the Hugo pin would be a painful reminder of how I just landed my friend in a steaming pile of shit. I'd probably take it off for a while, too.

I would assume that that was a way to sign off the post, and not the limit of his displeasure.
