yeah, he probably seems accessible and familiar because you see his work as flawed comfort/nostalgia and project it onto him

maybe you could try interacting with him on (social media of his choice, hopefully twitter).
oooor you could try contacting an old friend or acquaintance that seemed nice you lost the sight of. most people are at least flattered by a "hey I recently remembered x experience/time, how are you doing?"

He actually seems accessible and unintimidating more because of his awkwardly overly detailed commentaries that he appends to every single comic. You can get a very good sense of his personality through them. Maybe more so than one would ever want. He's very, very obviously not cool; he's just a big awkward nerd. And I too am a big awkward nerd, so I feel that I can relate.

Huh, maybe I should contact an old friend instead. I didn't really think of that... kind of intimidating though.
