[El Goonish Shive]

yeah, he probably seems accessible and familiar because you see his work as flawed comfort/nostalgia and project it onto him

maybe you could try interacting with him on (social media of his choice, hopefully twitter).
oooor you could try contacting an old friend or acquaintance that seemed nice you lost the sight of. most people are at least flattered by a "hey I recently remembered x experience/time, how are you doing?"

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

He actually seems accessible and unintimidating more because of his awkwardly overly detailed commentaries that he appends to every single comic. You can get a very good sense of his personality through them. Maybe more so than one would ever want. He's very, very obviously not cool; he's just a big awkward nerd. And I too am a big awkward nerd, so I feel that I can relate.

Huh, maybe I should contact an old friend instead. I didn't really think of that... kind of intimidating though.

would you believe that the art in this comic now is a million times better than it was when the comic first started? because it is (http://www.egscomics.com/index.php?id=7)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
it's funny because that practically would actually work as the dialogue in canon

For the record, he's supposed to be dressed like Ash from Pokémon in that picture. His hair is always like that, though.

that kinda makes him look like a blond mashup of Ash and Tracey :P

Oh god, it does. Oh god. Ash and Tracey's blond lovechild.

he's supposed to be dressed like Ash from Pokémon

This is supposed to make it better?

EXCELLENT utilization of balloons, OP.

(I don't think creepy per se. You sound lonely, OP, and it's understandable to want to connect again to someone with whom you felt a connection (even if it was tenuous and one-sided) in the past. Realistically, if you can figure out what qualities the artist represented to you, that might help you to find those qualities in someone else (or even yourself)>.

OP

I think he represents someone who's awkward and flawed enough that me and my social anxiety don't consider myself vastly inferior to him. Also we have some of the same interests and seem to have similar-ish mindsets in some ways.

I didn't even know that comic was still running.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
yup

whether it should still be running is another matter

It's better now than, say, Looking For Group was in its prime. (I'm tempted to say it's better than Casey and Andy ever was, that being the most direct comparison I can think of, but C&A fans might feed me to the Planet Devourer.)

I feel you OP. Not about El Goonish Shive, which I haven't read, but that you want to be his friend. I feel that way about this BNF in my fandom. I follow their blog and it just seems that we have so much in common even besides fandom and they seem like a cool person. And yeah, I'm lonely too.

A huge amount of applause for how well you made the words match up with the facial expressions. Everyone else go home, this is the best one.

Also, props for being another trooper who keeps sticking with EGS even though the shark has long since been jumped. I was rereading the birthday party arc today and marveling that there was a time I actually cared about these characters and what happened to them. Also, a time when the art was far less lifeless. Sigh.

I still have some faith this comic can turn itself around. I actually liked the boar-hunting arc, and the arc with Tengu at least had some nice ideas. (Though I have no idea what the deal is with Elliot's new love interest. She just seems like a straight version of Rhoda with some of Tedd's perversions, and that's hardly worth introducing a new character this late.)

OP

Thanks! I was actually surprised myself how well the text ended up fitting the comic I chose, so it was partly luck, but yeah.

I think the last EGS arc I was really invested in was the "New and Old Flames" arc. Really, the only characters I care about at all anymore are Justin and Susan (well, and George, weirdly, but he's a minor character). I'm still holding out for a more Justin-centric arc.

I still really like this comic, and yeah, I feel like the artist is really approachable.

My comment means nothing, and did not add to the conversation, I just wanted to say it. Woot! Go EGS! I wish I had commitment like he did!

That comic is pretty much everything I could want in a comic. Casual LGBT characters everywhere. Nerd niches. Female characters who aren't defined by their genders. And the author seems like he's an actual cool nice guy.
