Anyone have any horror recommendations?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-03-13 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Movies or books would be great. Internet content (short films/movies/stories/comics) would be even better. No jump out screamer stuff though.

I canceled my WoW subscription for a couple of months and I need some horror to fill that void in my life. :P

Oh yes! That is such an awesome comic. Thanks for linking it so I can put it in my creepy stuff bookmarks folder (I forgot to last time). :3

The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson! One of my favourite horror novels ever. It's the sort of book that makes you wonder every few pages if there's actually some crazy supernatural shit going on, or if it's all in the characters' heads.

If you do decide to read it, I'd recommend checking out the AO3 tag afterwards. There are only two fics there (and one is technically a fusion fic), but both are excellent.

Okay, this is the second time someone has recommended this book. I am going to buy it tonight. :|

edit: OMFG. Shirley Jackson wrote one of my favorite short stories, The Lottery. I read it as a kid and was so amazed by it. If The Haunting of Hill House is half as awesome as The Lottery, I am going to love it!

I adore that book.

I thought there were more fics than that at AO3. :( The one fic that is not a fusion (I haven't read the fusion) is pretty freaking awesome. Seconding your rec.

the movie the skeleton key if you haven't seen it yet. I've seen it about a million times and it still scares me every single time.

I think I saw it once. Fortunately I remember nothing about it so it will be like a new movie! Mwahaha.

I liked that one too. I saw it in the theory ages ago. I don't usually care for Kate Hudson either, but I liked her in that movie.

Can you watch hulu?

No but that will not stop me (unless that thing is something that is only on hulu).

Anything by Drew Daywalt or Mr. Creepypasta would be a recommendation from me.

https://www.youtube.com/user/DaywaltFearFactory

https://www.youtube.com/user/MrCreepyPasta/videos

Also for a few creepy short films, I would recommend...

Crazy killer robots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G3zUuVv6vk
Creepy pencils that break universal laws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MjTb5A68VA
What happens when you have a hole that gives you access to anything inside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5_Msrdg3Hk
Creepy fairies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_EyPVV-WxA

This last one isn't really a typical horror film. It's more of an adult fear that a lot of parents, caregivers, or older siblings could relate to. It starts off with a father who wakes up in a car with his zombified wife and his healthy infant child in the backseat....only to find out he has a bite on his arm.

Tale of Two Sisters- the Korean version. The US version is not good.

The US version is never good. :( I'll see if I can find a copy online (should be easy because it is fairly recent).

Alien is an all-time classic, as is the original Terminator. Both their sequels were far more actiony, though Aliens has its fare share of horror elements too.

Night of the Living Dead and Land of the Dead are Romero's best Dead films, but Dawn of the Dead, despite being a bit dated and kind of bad, remains a classic (the remake really helped repopularize the genre, too.)

28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later (fuck the haters) are both damn good films, as is the original Spanish [REC] and its sequel (watch both in order, as they basically make one whole movie.)

As far as books, I would recommend an anthology called Lovecraft Unbound. It's basically short stories inspired by Lovecraft without most of Lovecraft's GLARING FLAWS.

Love Alien and Aliens (not a big Terminator fan).

And I love zombie movies because they freak me out. The original Night of the Living Dead is soooo good.

And who doesn't like the 28 Days movies? I loved them (especially the first one).

And I will see if I can find that book at the library this weekend. :D

I liked his writing a lot less now than I did when I was younger, but Stephen King's Pet Semetary is one of my favorite horror novels. My other favorite is more aimed at children/young adults, but I remember it being really eerie. It's a ghost story called Wait Till Helen Comes.

How do you feel about horror video games? Limbo is a great, creepy little game.

I loved Limbo. I need to replay it to be honest. The music is awesome.

And I like (and have read) some of Stephen King's books. Though I prefer Dean Koontz.

My sister was terrified of Wait Till Helen Comes as a preteen. She still mentions it occasionally if a similar subject (like ghosts or books that affected you or whatever) comes up.

Joe Hill is great! Heart-Shaped Box is a nice ghost story, a bit slow to start but once it picks up it's pretty good. I really, really loved Horns, a great horror story AND a great romance (weird combination, perhaps)! His newest, NOS4A2 is SUPER creepy and really great. Fun premise and a really great heroine. His collection of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts is pretty good, but the stories are not exclusively horror, and in fact some of the best ones in the collection aren't horror at all. His short story 'Pop Art' (in 20th Century Ghosts) is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read.
