I don't think Lois was an "empty husk" or a stereotype. The "shrewish wife" stereotype is usually a straight man, so to speak, who gets exasperated at her husband for being sooooo wacky, but who doesn't get to deliver any humor of her own beyond pointed looks and eyerolls. Lois gets to carry her own humor and have arcs that revolve around her being just as wacky as the rest of her family.

BUT

Lois is the reason I can't watch more than one or two episodes of Malcolm in the Middle in a row. She is such a deeply upsetting, horrible person. And I know, I know, there's "tender moments" and "she really loves them all anyway" moments. But she hits waaaaay too close to the bone, and too often I think she is so grossly unfair to her family in a way that stops being funny (especially), even if it is supposed to be hyperbolic, and just makes me feel uncomfortable. And I definitely get that she's always doing what she thinks is best for her family, but...well, I know parents who you could say that about as well, and it doesn't mean that they didn't do a lot of damage or that they were making good calls.

And the episode where she finally admits she was a terrible mother to Francis and Francis has a panic attack nearly gave me a panic attack as well. It's so very painfully accurate.

It's not that it's bad comedy. I just can't handle it. Which bugs me, because I really get a kick out of Hal and Malcolm.

THIS!

Let's just say that having someone scream in your face for leaving your toys on the floor is not the sort of thing jokes are made of, it's the sort of thing traumatic childhood memories are made of.
