no.

Can only speak about Home Improvement and Malcokm in The Middle, but they were definitely not "empty husks" or "bitchy". They were well rounded full characters on their own. I can see if maybe you only watched one or two episodes and jumped to conclusions, but if you were actually watching the show regularly you would see that.

However a big part of their role is centered around being a wife and mother, and maybe that is in fact the character trait that seems to bug you so much and make a show unwatchable. I know I've seen a lot of people complain about that.

What?

Jill was bitchy? In what way exactly?

And no, they're not empty husks. And I swear Lois acts the way she does because she and Hal raised five hellions.

Did you even watch Malcolm in the Middle? Or Prison Break? What do you consider an empty, stereotype? Because some of those women have vastly different personalities, goals, and plotlines.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering the shit Debra had to put up with, I'm not surprised at how frustrated and flustered she was. Poor woman.

If I were Debra I would have left Ray years ago, he deserved all the yelling at him. Frankie and Lois have life shitting on them left and right so I think their bitchiness is justified. It's hard to stay calm and collected when it feels like life is crashing down around you (and in Lois' case have kids like Francis and Reese) and you can barely afford to survive. Both Frankie and Lois also try really hard to be positive, but man, I can't blame them.

Okay, I'll give you Debra because she was awful (as was everyone in that show tbf) but Lois is a great character (if very flawed...like everyone else in the show)

Definitely no to Jill Taylor. Sure she may have had some bitchy moments - but who wouldn't if they were married to Tim Taylor? I mean, all things considered, I think she handled it pretty damn well.

Debra, okay but that's only because there was only one good character in that entire show. But Lois? Really? Did you... watch the show?

It's been a comedy sitcom trope for... well, forever, OP. I'm not thrilled by that, either. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume you're referring to the sitcom practice of allowing males to have a variety of different personalities, whereas woman can only be "the cutesy one" or "the humourless nagging wife".

I don't like Sarah from Prison Break (I sort of warmed up to her in the last season but for the most part, I didn't like her) but I don't understand lumping her in with the rest of those characters. The ones that I recognize are moreover "pissed off, put-upon housewife" character types but that character type doesn't apply to Sarah at all. As much as I dislike Sarah, criticizing her as too "bitchy" doesn't make sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
No way.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Never seen the others so I can't vouch one way or another, but wasn't pretty much everyone in Everybody Loves Raymond kind of like that? I think the only really likable character was Robert.

Woo, time travel secret!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The only two I recognise are Sara from Prison Break and Lois from MitM, but a) they're nothing like each other, b) I don't remember Sara as being bitchy at all, and c) Lois was hardly an 'empty husk' of a character. A terrible human being in many ways, but definitely not empty. She was one of the most fascinating elements of that show.

On the bright side, I'm now imagining Lois getting dumped in the middle of the PB shenanigans. Her and Gretchen would possibly get along alarmingly well ...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen the others, as I don't care for comedies, and Rescue Me just wasn't for me (because the guy characters were awful, so I'm not sure why you'd single out a girl character?), but I have no idea what you are talking about with Sara. I didn't really care for her all that much, but she was definitely not an "empty husk" or "bitchy".

(Anonymous) 2014-03-13 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, Lois from Malcolm in the Middle was far more then a "bitchy" character, she had a huge temper, yes, but she was a highly intelligent woman and often had a lot of wisdom to share with her boys who she loved.

I seriously would take a second look at the series, because the characters and relationships in Malcolm in the Middle are far more complex then I think you are giving it credit for. It was an extremely well written show.

As far as the other women, eh, I guess.

Lois from Malcolm in the Middle? An empty stereotypical husk? What's with all these secrets where the OP clearly has never been in the same room with the source material?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Louis is a badass and I can't fathom people hating her.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I might be seeing where you're coming from if I'm squinting REALLY hard, but I have to, you know, squint REALLY hard.

There's a difference between being an empty husk of a character and having a similar ROLE in a show. Yes, I definitely object to female characters being used constantly as a force of active resistance to the (usually male) main character's hopes and dreams, or a source of constant misery for their significant other, but that doesn't mean they all have the exact same vacant personality or angry persona.

They just seem to have the same purpose in the story.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of words I would use to describe Sara Tancredi, but "bitchy" and "empty" are not among them.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-14 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
For a second I thought that was Frankie from The Middle in the upper right corner and we were going to have to *have words* but it's not so I'll let fans of those shows comment.

So completely unrelated to anything, but I love Frankie from The Middle.
