I only saw it now but I MUST defend my Lois. She was actually the smartest individual in the family, as the show often hinted at (along with the supposed genius) and they always went lengths in the show to show how smarter and ahead of everyone else she was. So yeah, I think she was, and was meant to be, a very cool character.

Actually she's one of my favorite female characters.

I think someone upthread said it best, but the sad thing is that the sitcom trope often does present women as "the smart one." As they said, "men are childish and clueless, women are smart but unpleasant."

Lois was always smart and a step ahead of most everyone else on the show, but she was a terrible parent. And I keep seeing people say it's because she had to raise such horrible children, but...no, I think they were pretty horrible because of the way she raised them. I mean, you couldn't win in that household--you knew that anything you did, right or wrong, could go badly for you, or that you could be unfairly blamed and punished for something you didn't do. I think most kids would respond to that by either shutting down and walking on eggshells, or rebelling against an unfair authority.

More than smart I felt she was the head of the family, quite indisputably so. Yes, I'm aware of the 'strong women' problem, I seriously hate most of the modern heroines. But I feel she was another kind of thing, because she was also, like you noticed, a terrible parent for most things. Like Hal was, to be fair! They were both terrible, and their sons were terrible because of them, I think this was the point of the sitcom! Of course presented in a funny way so that it wouldn't become a issue, because well, out of comedy channel this would be an abusive family!

The traits I loved and IMO made her more than the 'strong woman' were the cleverness, the ruthlessness, the controlling behavior and also the random unusual acts of kindness toward the family. She was like another version of a Walter White without the drug empire, impossibly frustrated, terribly better than her own actual situation (imposed by family obligations) and at the same time a good, functioning person (not always).

I'm more for adoring flawed characters, because that's the kind of writing that I feel represents me as a woman, and IMO Lois wasn't a cliched female character. :)
