The relevant term is "soft rape." Rape with resistance, pleading, etc. is "hard rape," but it's not nearly as popular, and a lot of people who fap to rape porn only read soft rape. (In fact, some sites refuse to use the term "rape" for soft rape--they call it "nonconsent." Literotica has a rule banning "rape," but an entire section for "nonconsent.")

If I sound oddly neutral, it's because I'm putting great effort into not getting very, very angry when I talk about this.

Where does dub-con fit into that scheme?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's not they rape if they want it, hun. And they do want it if the writer writes them so, you can't argue against the Word of God.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
i've never seen the term soft rape anywhere in my twelve years of fandom. where'd you see it? it's probably not widespread.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
reeks of sjw to me

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
really? reeks of just the opposite to me

sjw would be more like 'there is no such thing as dub-con it's all rape'

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well, like, in all fairness...that's an actual truth. Dubcon in reality is rape.

But I also understand for the purposes of fics and kinks etc it's different.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think that I don't think I've been raped it's your place to tell me so.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
*NOT your place to tell me so
Though it does a make a pretty funny typo. Sums up many of today's problems.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I forget where I first saw it. I thought it was more common, but I guess not. I think it spun off the difference between soft vore (swallowed whole or turned into something like ice cream) and hard vore (bloodily chewed to pieces.)

Previous poster: that was reflexive; I apologize

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Crap, I did it again! I keep reflexively typing in OP when I go anon, even if I'm not OP. I am so sorry, real OP.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I did see 'soft rape' a lot when I was entering fandom fifteen years ago, especially in fandoms where quite explicit kinks were common (I never read but a few accidentally as most fics in those certain fandoms had their shit explicitly stated in the headers). Most of it would likely be called either plain 'rape/non - con' or dub-con today. It's not a term you see much at all these days in the SJW era of fandom where everything the SJWs see is hard core violent rape, even dub-con.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never encountered the term in fandom, but I've seen it used outside of fandom. There was a really gross article/editorial/something I read a while back arguing that "soft rape" was a useful category to describe such-and-such sexual encounters, and pretty much every example the author described was straight up rape with no ambiguity at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, please don't get very, very angry.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry. I get really self-righteous and go on for paragraphs and paragraphs.

(I almost did it again--I had to blank the subject and type in AYRT because I saw I'd typed in OP again. Maybe I'll do a secret about accidentally impersonating OPs.)

I have never heard of "soft rape". The term is usually "dubious consent" in fanfiction circles, and "rape fantasy" in every other circle I've seen.
"Nonconsensual" usually refers to rape that isn't intended to appeal (though it may be portrayed in a titillating fashion anyway because some people don't know how to portray regular sex and sexual violence differently).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. "dubcon" vs "noncon" "Dubious content" is where one starts really wanting it, is guilted in to it, is overpowered and only cautions that 'this is a really bad idea!' or something. It's sexual and usually non-violent. It always ends in pleasure for the unwilling participant and generally a desire for more. It's about giving into sex without feeling guilty, without having to be responsible for the other partner's pleasure, while still experiencing sexual gratification. It also can have shades of 'this person loves/wants me so much they can't control themselves' whether by dominating or subbing.

Non-consensual is generally much more violent and doesn't need to concern sexual gratification on either end. Basically, it's 'rape' in the popular idea of how it plays out. That's more about simply being dominated and losing control, or having total control over another.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Dubious consent is a horrible term because it umbrellas three really different things:

A) Stories where consent is unclear to the reader (i.e. roleplay that is often resolved at the end - fortunately it is now being labelled more and more as "consent play").
B) Stories where consent is unclear in the world (i.e. anything that would be targeted by "yes means yes" talk IRL)
C) Stories about rape where the victim starts liking it or experiencing a physically positive reaction halfway through (wtf part of this is dubious it makes me so angry).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-16 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to consider dubcon to be situations that would be rape in real life, but since you're inside the characters' heads, you know they're not actually nonconsenting or don't consider themselves to be raped, or situations (that couldn't really happen) where ability to consent becomes dubious, like with sex pollen or something. It makes sense to separate these from fics where at least one of the parties is 100% obviously not consenting, since they have very different tones.

Hard rape isn't nearly as popular? I don't know about that.
