First of all, I agree with you that original character does not equal Mary Sue, I like original characters, and I think the hate-on much of fandom has for original characters is overblown. However:

Original character in a fanfic means original TO THE FIC, or in some cases, original to the fic author. Obviously all fictional characters were original at some point; the question is, are they original now?

Some people go into fic only wanting to read about characters who have already been established. They have a different mindset when approaching non-fic media.

It's just a matter of taste.

And also, your secret design isn't really easy to read. If it weren't too big, it'd be worse. The shadowing under the letters helps, but not enough.
