Hey, OP of this, guess what? You're not a damn iota better. In fact, you're an asshole and need to shut up and get some damn perspective yourself. You must be really unhappy with yourself to come off like this.

Am I the only one reading this as "I've had a hard life so most other people who talk about their lives are brats and have no right to complain"?

Geez I thought I got enough of this attitude on Tumblr.

Exactly. I bloody hate it. OP, your suffering does not make a damn of difference to those other people who suffer. The fact that you had it hard does not magically make anyone's life all right.

A person can maintain perspective and yet still be upset about the circumstances of his or her own life.

People shouldn't whine or emotionally manipulate people, but there's nothing wrong with someone looking for sympathy when they've gone through a difficult time. Suggesting that sympathy isn't deserved so long as there's someone out there who has suffered more than you is as bereft of perspective as thinking you've had it worse than anyone else.

First of all, I agree with you that original character does not equal Mary Sue, I like original characters, and I think the hate-on much of fandom has for original characters is overblown. However:

Original character in a fanfic means original TO THE FIC, or in some cases, original to the fic author. Obviously all fictional characters were original at some point; the question is, are they original now?

Some people go into fic only wanting to read about characters who have already been established. They have a different mindset when approaching non-fic media.

It's just a matter of taste.

I can't tell if you're trolling or just really dense. When people say "OC" they are not referring to all characters ever created, they are referring specifically to fancharacters. No one ever uses the term OC to refer to non-fancharacters. It means "Original Character", yes, but to say it applies to ALL characters is to be too literal-minded. Because as you said, all characters are someone's original character, therefore when not used to refer to non-fancharacters the term OC becomes entirely redundant. So from the context in which it's used it should obvious that "OC" is meant to only refer to fancharacters.

Defend OCs if you will, but don't be such a pedantic fucking tool about it.

I'm pretty nitpicky and I often try to refer to non-fandom related OCs as 'Fan Characters', mostly to separate the fandom-based characters from the characters I came up with that have no fandom relation/connection whatsoever.

But I think it's much easier for people just to lump fan characters in with OCs and call them all OCs, because... technically they *are* original, albeit original to the fandom setting and whatnot. But the really grey-ish line that divides them -IMHO- they're not completely original, since they may be derived from a certain aspect of the fandom/canon itself (i.e. most of my Green Lantern FCs are all from canon races, as are my 'Old Republic' toons)

If that makes any sense, anyways.

While I wouldn't phrase it so harshly, I do think fandom can act as an enabler for some people. When you're begging your followers for rent money, but showing off the $500 merchandise you just bought, you might want to think about your spending habits.

helping out means paying bills and buying groceries for you? those are things you can only do if you have a job. people who are living with their parents most likely don't have one. you can help out in other ways that don't involve money at all.

Sometimes I will admit to feeling angry about stuff like this too. But I think this secret makes your statement hypocritical. People just handle things differently. What isn't a big problem to someone might be a huge roadblock to someone else.
And I often find people "running to the internet to get coddled" annoying too. I think it's because I'm jealous of them having people who just jump to kiss their ass and make them feel better, and send 20 messages of sympathy even over small problems. I wish I had more people who cared about my feeling about things in my life.

Perspective is important, but it doesn't mean shit when it kills your empathy for everything else.

There's a difference between "I'm sorry your best friend isn't talking to you, but you seem to be venting a lot about it lately. Is there anything you can do to mend bridges or move forward?" and "JESUS TITS I'M SICK TO DEATH ABOUT HEARING ABOUT YOUR FUCKING FRIEND, THERE ARE STARVING CHILDREN IN AFRICA WHO DON'T EVEN HAVE A FRIEND TO EAT SO STFU YOU UNGRATEFUL TWAT."

Validate the feelings, but discourage the melodramatic behavior.

P.S. I'm sorry you had to deal with so many horrible things at such a young age.

TB2

(Anonymous) 2014-03-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I think OP was talking more about people who complain endlessly rather than people as a whole. Ever since Tumblr became popular it become less of a stream and more like a flood of people that their lives are horrible and, apparently, the worst ever.

Plus, did anyone bother to read the second half of the secret? OP was essentially telling people to put their problem in perspective rather than acting like their's were the only one. After all, an astounding amount of people on the internet seem rather short-sighted when it comes to things like this.

It's hard to empathize with someone who hasn't gone through what you've gone through. The same can be said the other way around.

That's what life is about.
