Nah I think wanting to talk about your fic is fine and I totally get that but...idk OP strikes me as kind of lonely, and they want their fic to be a conversation starter/way for them to make friends. In my experience it always works better when I make friends first, and then write fics/talk about writing with them.

Also, it's something that probably works better on an LJ comm. Although, as an amendment to my earlier comment, they could also try starting a discussion in their author's notes, but talking about what influenced their fic, or where their headcanon for certain details came from, and maybe asking "what do you guys think?" Nobody's gonna come to your slumber party if you don't invite them.

Dude, I'm lonely. Almost all my fandom interaction comes from here on F!S. Most of my fandom-specific communities on the journal-sites for talking about fandom and fannish material are sleepy or dead, there is no real discussion going on in Tumblr, and people don't really talk on fanworks anymore.

And I get where you're coming from about those A/N's, but then you get the problem of people skipping over your A/N's entirely because tl;dr and even saying that the A/N took up too much space and should have been avoided. I always ask people what they think of my fics, to comment and leave concrit, and that just goes right back to the original problem of people not wanting to say anything other than praise in the first place.

Heh, you're not the only one -- F!S is also my main fandom hangout, primarily because I'm more of a books fan, and most books... do not have a fandom (or are on Tumblr, and argh Tumblr). I've a better chance of having bookish discussions here than elsewhere, even for some of the book series that have a lot of fic (I really, really like meta discussion, and I can't seem to find that easily).

Yeah like I said they can try putting up A/N's but people still have free will. And I wasn't trying to discriminate against the lonely. I am lonely too. I was just saying I think they're lonely because it seems most people in this thread think they're just an asshole.

This is just something I'm not always the most rational about. Most of the time I can ignore it but every now and then I end up wanting to scream when I realized how much of my beloved fandom experience I've lost and how little I've gained in return.

OP here

Yeah, I got into writing specifically to connect with other fans. Back when LJ was the thing, it was much easier to make friends and have side conversations, but I guess I'm in the Bitter Old Fangirl boat because AO3 just doesn't create the same environment.

I will try using author notes. I tend not to be chatty at all in my notes, just giving credit for source material or citing references. Maybe if I say something in my end notes about my process. I don't know. I'm kind of shy, which is ironic, I realize.

Excellent icon, btw.

Yeah that might be it. Like I said AN's won't automatically make people talk to you. I think Ao3 kind of lacks intimacy? Probably the people who make friends through their fics also link to a tumblr with an ask box or something.

Have you de-anoned here? Most of my online friends are from f!s. There's also http://write-away.dreamwidth.org/, which isn't for sharing fics but for talking about writing.

It's great! My writing and self esteem and writing-related self esteem have improved a lot since I've been going there.

I totally feel you, OP, and was coming down to make a comment to defend you. I have a similar problem, and I get where you're coming from--when people leave a string of Kudos on every fic in a ten or twenty story series, but never leave a comment, I do feel a little like...I don't know, like I've sort of spent all this time with a person, or that they've spent it with me, but they can't even bother to say anything more. It's nice to have a chance to talk to people who read your stuff, and while I get that it' snot everyone's cup of tea and some people really embrace the ability to leave a Kudos without saying anything more, I came of age on news groups and YahooGroups and forums and places where there was a much better community vibe and I do miss that.

OP

Thanks. And I really do wish I could thank them, is the thing. You can't thank someone for leaving you so many kudos or taking the time for reading your stories. It's just this huge, lonely disconnect.

My first fandom was a yahoo group. <3
