I Dunno. I suppose that's why pancake day is the day before lent starts (Pancakes have egg in them, right?). But as long as I've been around it's just been a time to give up excesses.

Once upon a time, yes, you were supposed to give up meat (but not fish), eggs, and dairy for Lent. Nowadays the more common interpretation is that you give up some self-chosen indulgence.

Because they were considered more enjoyable and nutritious than fish and vegetables, and you should be practicing self-denial to bring yourself closer to God. There was also the argument in the early Middle Ages that if your food was too nutritious the buildup in your body made you more lustful.
