My mother had a friend who would give up Coca Cola for Lent.

I Dunno. I suppose that's why pancake day is the day before lent starts (Pancakes have egg in them, right?). But as long as I've been around it's just been a time to give up excesses.

Once upon a time, yes, you were supposed to give up meat (but not fish), eggs, and dairy for Lent. Nowadays the more common interpretation is that you give up some self-chosen indulgence.

It's cool, St Patrick's Day doesn't count as Lent. I mean, hell, there is a pretty substantial overlap between people who have traditionally celebrated the holiday and people who celebrate Lent.

You can give up anything I suppose, but I've always considered it a time to give up excesses (My girlfriend, for example, who habitually sleeps 16 hours a day has given up her long lie-ins.)

I've practiced Lent in...sort of the same way but with way different rhetoric. Didn't do it this year, though. If I were to give up "excesses"...idk, I don't drink very often, and I don't eat red meat to begin with. :|a I guess I would have to give up Spending Too Much Time on the Internet. Or Eating Extra Portions. or something idk

That's what you get for giving up life-giving sustenance. Misery. Drink your green milk and be sad.

I'm not a Christian but iirc, Lent doesn't actually "count" on Sundays or church holidays. St. Patrick's Day is technically a church holiday so... have at it!

Exactly - it's called "Exemptionis Festivalis" which meant that if your particular St's day just so happened to be during Lent, you could celebrate your arse off in their honor anyway. See what you learn when you go to a monastic boarding school? St. Benedict's fell mid-lent one year, and there was the most rollicking, meatiest, drinkingest party ever.

I wish I could drink!! But I have a cold and I have to get to work in an hour and a half. and since I drive around in a 4k ton two seater vehicle that is a giant battering ram, yeah....
