I'm not a Christian but iirc, Lent doesn't actually "count" on Sundays or church holidays. St. Patrick's Day is technically a church holiday so... have at it!

Unless you're actually giving up alcohol for your own personal benefit or to better yourself or self-discipline or whatever

which is probably a better reason to give up something

Exactly - it's called "Exemptionis Festivalis" which meant that if your particular St's day just so happened to be during Lent, you could celebrate your arse off in their honor anyway. See what you learn when you go to a monastic boarding school? St. Benedict's fell mid-lent one year, and there was the most rollicking, meatiest, drinkingest party ever.
