I got banned from three separate comms back during Potterdammerung.

I swear it was only 60% my fault, (and also I was 15 and thought it was hilarious. It wasn't a drama thing, cross my heart.)

Uhhhhh...a lotta stuff. Mostly yelling the MST3K mantra at Harmonians in really obnoxious ways and sticking my nose into discussions I wasn't invited to to quote evidence out of the books like a fiend to stir shit up in various OMG HOW DARE SHE IT'S WRONG/DOESN'T MAKE SENSE/HAD NO FORESHADOWING kerfuffles and generally being really irritating to everyone (especially since I had invaded comms that I had nothing in common with because I was drinking that stuff up all over the internet. I wanted to read EVERYTHING that ANYONE had said about Harry Potter since the 7th book came out and wanted to observe EVERY single flamewar.

Watching the shit hit the fan that summer was better than March Madness and the Olympics and the Oscars all rolled into one neverending bar brawl. I probably laid down quotes from every single chapter (if not every single SCENE) in the entire series during that period. *shakes head* Looking back nowadays I have no idea where I found the energy or motivation, tbh. It wouldn't have worked in any fandom other than HP though. Even back then, I was generally too sensitive and disliked unpleasantness too much, but for HP, especially back then at the peak, I had truly hit the IDGAF-Bliss stage of fandom happiness and everything bounced off me like teflon.

That sounds really awesome in a weird way.

I never got into fandom on that level.

...honestly, I wish I could have seen some of the HP stuff in its heyday. I really, really do.

It was INSANE. It was like one of those cartoons where oil is spouting up in huge geysers all over a field, one after another after another. Seriously. But I think it was humanly impossible to actually absorb enough of heyday HP fandom to get even a representative slice of it. Almost no one had an in-perspective, non-misleading sense of what the fandom as a whole was like and the experience was pretty discombobulating.

Oh God. I was really into the ship war back in the day. I was really into debating and participated in quite a bit of ship bashing. I was the cliche. Although, it was actually the intensity of the post-HBP/DH war and the way some people on the side I thought I was on insisted that everyone on that side had to agree that everything about the last two books was objectively horrible that knocked me upside the head and made me really hate ship wars in general.

Wonder if we ever overlapped...? One of them wasn't Sugar Quill or FAP, was it?

LOL, ngl, knowing this delights me. You're the sweetest, most intelligent person, and thinking of young!you shit-stirring in HP fandom is kind of beautiful.

I'm sweet? I think I'm still too rude and tend to make passive aggressive knee-jerk comments that I later regret way too often.

But yeah, I was...uh, VERY different back then. Oddly, I actually took fandom less seriously back then, even though I was way less laid-back, which is mostly due to being introduced to HP fandom as soon as I got regular internet access -- I didn't really realize how sane fandom could be until the HP insanity died down.

You're definitely sweet to me. In my experience even the nicest people are passive aggressive occasionally so I don't think it's that big a deal; no one can be 100% pleasant all the time. You seem very reasonable and fair to me, anyway.

Fandom brings out the worst in some folks, and a lot of people go through phases where they do stupid shit or overreact. It's almost a right of passage at this point.

The biggest fandoms are typically the worst, so even though I was never in HP fandom I understand what you're saying.
