Fandom Rant

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
don't mind me just ranting about fandom-related stuff and i don't want to put this on my tumblr

SO APPARENTLY there's been a few people in the Hannibal fandom accusing Bryan Fuller of queerbaiting with Will & Hannibal.

I just...

you know what, you guys are right! the queer community deals with many issues, such as lack of human rights in many countries, discrimination, high levels of homelessness, poverty, sexual assault, depression & suicide, and hate crimes.

But the real issue here is clearly representation!

But not just ANY representation. (like happy couples who don't die as penance for their queerness.)

No. We need it in the form of a cannibalistic serial killer and the FBI profiler he manipulates, traumatises, frames for murder (and, in the books, guts him with a knife, and sics another serial killer on his wife and kids.)

hannigram being canon is what the queer community TRULY NEEDS. and how can we best accomplish this? why, by arguing on the internet, attacking the creators of the show, and sending each other anonymous, hate-filled messages!

and clearly Bryan Fuller is a complete MONSTER for refusing to air the reels of sexy mads/hugh footage that must exist (and that he probably hoards for his personal enjoyment.)

hahaha it's not like this is about whiny, entitled fanbrats who are upset that their pairing isn't TOTES CANON U GUIZE.
no, this is about SOCIAL FUCKING JUSTICE.

this is why i don't get involved in fandom i should have known better. and i do think having more queer people in popular media is important, but NOT IN THE FORM OF A CANNIBALISTIC MURDERER WHY WOULD YOU EVEN SUGGEST THAT.

i am so sick of people using social justice issues as cards to play just to win an argument. like "oooh look at me i'm so enlightened here let me drop some buzzwords i found in my sociology textbook to back up my fandom argument because this is clearly better than helping out at the local homeless shelter or charity or something."

and i am sick of people sitting on their asses arguing on the internet so they can feel like they're *~ making a difference ~*

and why the fuck do people care whether their ship is canon or not, why does it matter??? people ship characters from different universes and it doesn't stop them!

Ugh. I feel your pain. People who think Hannibal is queerbait have no idea about the character of Hannibal. Have never watched the movies. Have never read the books.

Hannibal does not romantically love Will. He can not. That's not in his make-up. He sees Will more as a master and a pet relationship. Will is an interesting creature to him. A dog that he scratch behind the ears and can do an interesting trick unlike the rest of the mutts around him. However, if the dog does get out of hand, Hannibal has no trouble putting his pet down. But it is he who must put him down and no one else. It's all about manipulation and control. And that's not love.

OP

Exactly. NONE OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE EVER READ THE BOOKS. OR WATCHED THE MOVIES. OR EVEN WATCHED THE SHOW AND GIVEN IT FIVE SECONDS OF THOUGHT.

Dude, I don't even watch the show and even I get this.

Stupid Internet SJWs ruin everything.

Nowadays Queer Baiting means "I'm mad because my ship isn't canon".

That gif sums up Hannibal and Will's relationship.

OP

oh my god you're right

that sloth even resembles mads mikkelsen

Re: Fandom Rant

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Put a spread-collar shirt on it and the resemblance would be perfect.

Hey, you suppose that'll be the plot twist? They find out Hannibal's a killer and they think they've captured him, but it turns out it was a sloth in a spread-collar shirt all along?

I still remember the most baffling queerbaiting accusation I've ever seen. On some episode of Elementary a prostitute (I think) winked at Joan and oh god, I guess that was too much for some people. It was a really melodramatic post too, written in that affected, over-emotional tumblr style.

Because that is queerbaiting.

And that hurts.

;-----------;

Poor baby. Showing a queer woman on TV was really crossing the line.

Re: Fandom Rant

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
By that logic you can't show any queer people at all or you're queerbaiting. Of course, as we know, two presumably straight people of the same sex having a close, platonic friendship is also queerbaiting. Or two people if the same sex just interacting is queerbaiting. What isn't queerbaiting? Must all TV shows will consist of only establishing shots and incidental music?

I mean, to be fair to people who actually defend queerbaiting as a concept, that person was WRONG about what queerbaiting is. But... these concepts are flimsy and nebulous in the first place, so them getting co-opted by dumb people is kind of inevitable...

But to answer your question, yes.

Re: Fandom Rant

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
How dare they. Either make Joan/prostitute super duper serious canon instantly or show absolutely nothing at all. That's realistic, right?

Re: Fandom Rant

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I know anon, I know.

As much as I know that using SJ and making accusations of queerbaiting is the new trend to both try to "pressure" the creators to make their ships canon and to act as if they are into it for the greater good and not because they're obsessed with their ships, it still annoys me so, so much.

I have to admit, I have a hard time taking genuine and grounded issues of queerbaiting seriously, because 90% of the time I see it, it's HOW DARE YOU FORCE ME TO WEAR THESE SLASH GOGGLES.
