I'm an atheist.

I was raised an evangelical conservative Christian, though, and honestly... ...after said upbringing I'd be hard-pressed not to call it child abuse. There were so many noxious anti-sexuality, anti-woman, anti-gay, racist messages that were so deeply and profoundly damaging it took years to crawl out from and attain some semblance of rational normalcy. I realize that there are more liberal churches out there (my little brother still attends one that marries gays and allows women to become preachers, etc. - in some ways that made him worse in my parents eyes, as I was a nonbeliever and he was a heretic) that might not be as a intellectually and morally loathsome, but needless to say I won't be bringing up any kids of mine in Christianity, as no matter how liberal and inviting a Christian church becomes, one read-through of the Bible is enough to reveal the Christian god as a petty, jealous, genocidal hypocrite.

You know, good for you for specifying "evangelical conservative Christian". I respect that, after all the horrible crap you were put through, you still won't tar all Christians with the same brush. That takes a lot of integrity. And I say that as a fellow atheist.

I still have friends (and like I said, a brother) who are happy, friendly, sane liberal Christians who aren't going to abuse their children that way, so I know it's not the whole religion. Just select cults.
