I'm a Christian because Jesus makes a pretty cool imaginary friend.

No, because I've never come across a religion that made sense to me. If it contradicts itself all the time and even its internal logic isn't consistent, what exactly are they asking me to believe in? Which parts? 8|

I have not gone to church in a lonnnnnnng time. There are so many times you can hear the Bible's greatest hits in sermon form before you slip into a bored to death coma. But I still have the faith. I think I could hold back a vampire or two with a cross. (Catholic, btw.)

Re: Religion

(Anonymous) 2014-03-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. As for why, it's mainly because I just don't subscribe to the idea that there's a benevolent deity watching over the world. I try not to be cynical about this, but once you've seen so many terrible things happen to good people, it's really, really hard to believe that any deity who loves their followers would let this happen.

I also dislike handwaving rationalizations like, "It's God's will" or "God works in mysterious ways", because they're non-explanations meant to shut down the conversation as well as the thought process behind it.

I'm....very broad Christian I guess? My dad was a terrible Catholic but I went to Baptist churches as a kid. Is there a word for someone who believes there is a greater force out there but does not conform to any one religion? I am not a fan of organized religion because of how most of them twist the words and meanings of religious texts to justify being an asshole.

I don't follow an organized religion, but I find religion extremely interesting and I've studied various. I haven't come across an established one that fits me, so over the past several years I've been fleshing out my personal belief system / worldview and I think it's pretty snazzy.

I was raised as a Christian but when I was 13/14 years old I started having doubts and in the end I stopped believing in God. Nowadays I'm an atheism because the idea of God makes no sense to me. If there's a God, he doesn't give a shit about us.

Re: Religion

No. It's hard to be religious when you have yet to find an explanation for a deity that seems plausible.

1. Yes.

2. Born and raised, left it for many years, discovered the grass was NOT greener, returned to being observant again a few years ago.

So it is literally way more complicated than I make it sound, but, that's it. That's my answer.

No, because I do not believe there is a god. If I believed there was a god I would be religious. Probably a Catholic as that's the profession in which I was raised. But I do not think that there is one. The idea of god makes perfect sense to me and I have a lot of respect for religion; I just don't think it's ultimately how the world is.

Absolutely not, and I kind of started getting anti-religious (after a long period of maintaining a live-and-let-live attitude) after watching the shitshow that was the 2012 election. That was the election that made me stop voting Republican for good, too, even on a local level.

I...don't know? I'm not atheist or agnostic. I'm Judeo-Christian Buddist and Buddists are insanely chill and non-dogmatic and actually recommend updating scriptures to reflect new ideas as living documents, rather than reverting back to them as an absolute truth. I'm not sure if generally-accepted notions of religiosity really apply. I don't really practice anything regularly and I don't really talk about it much, because I find discussing religion to be sort of pointless unless I'm discussing it as a social phenomenon, but I looooooove religious documents and art and music and all that.

As for why, because atheism doesn't quite make sense to me on an instinctive level, and agnosticism is kinda unsatisfying and feels like being in a limbo. Like, I'd rather pick a hypothesis that might be bogus than not pick a hypothesis at all. (Of course, that's just what it feels like to me personally.)

Granted, I'm sure all religions are more metaphor than anything and are all at least 50% bogus if not more, but that doesn't mean they're 100% bogus. I view them as being like the blind men with the elephant -- you know something's there, but you only have a tiny highly misleading piece of the truth and it might feel totally different than another persons' piece, and you could totally be extrapolating all wrong due to the fact that your lived experience and memory gives you biases.

Yes. I'm a nondenominational Christian. (Once considered myself a Quaker; may return to that one day.)

Why? Hmm. I believe there is a fundamental good that can overcome a fundamental evil. I find it highly unlikely that a bunch of separate people just hoaxed Jesus' entire story into being. I find it hard to believe that the earth and everything in it is nothing more than an accident (I should clarify that this does not mean I reject scientific assertions re: the origin of the earth, I just believe there was more to it than just chance). I find it hard to believe that emotions such as love, sorrow, and awe came about purely as evolutionary byproducts. I think we have a physical and spiritual aspect to ourselves.

I'm.... not sure I really qualify as a Christian, but I say I am because I do believe in Jesus, and see Him as a savior. However, I don't think that necessarily has to mean He is the son of God. Whoever Jesus really is/was, it's the teachings that matter the most to me.

Overall, I essentially think there's a bit of truth in all religions, and that the Bible - both Christian and Hebrew - is more a series of parables with some of that same truth. So it's not that I see the Bible as bogus - I just see it as a transcribed retelling of retellings of retellings.

So there you have it.

No, never was and probably never will...

And there isn't really a reason behind it, except I was not raised religious, I don't live in a particularly religious country nor do I feel any connection to an Higher Power.

I was baptised in THe Church of Norway (Protestant Lutheranism) but my confirmation was in The Norwegian Atheist and Agnostic society...

I am not. I'd love to be religious, since the reality of death depresses me more than anything, but I just can't believe in something without actual evidence/that is so blatantly human wish fulfillment. I don't hate religion, it served a very important role in history and human social evolution, but it's just not logical at all.

I'm an atheist. I really did try out Christianity when I was a teenager to see if there was anything to it, since my parents raised me atheist and I didn't want to dismiss something I had never tested. Nope. Tried a bunch of singing and praying, but it didn't do anything.

And after reading the bible I concluded either god doesn't exist or he's a mega asshole. Either way it's not something I want to be part of.

Re: Religion

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an agnostic, more or less. I was raised Catholic, but Church was always more a family thing than a religious thing for me. When I realised (not drastically or anything, just sort of noticed one day) that I pretty much hadn't ever believed, I read around for a while at the various ideas people had about religion. I found some ideas that I liked more than others - a lot of the theism/pantheism/deism strands were interesting, and the Brahman strands of Hinduism - but in end I realised that none of them clicked to the extent that I could honestly say "I believe this is the way things are".

However, I never much got the hard atheist ways of thinking either, because the sensation of trying to prove a negative ran me into the exact same problems. I couldn't honestly say that I believed there was no force out there that might be called a deity in some form or another. I just basically didn't have the proof/information.

Agnosticism fits me, more or less. I honestly don't know what shape the universe is or what forces may inhabit it. I think I more or less figure that whatever religion is right, if any, I'll find out when it comes time to meet the maker or whatever, and we'll sort it out then. Until then I'm just gonna life my life as seems most right from first principles, and if the powers that be want to argue with me about it come end of days, I can do that too. And if the hard atheists are right and it's just an empty void beyond death, well, then I don't have to worry about it none either. I'll get there when I get there, and we'll see what way it works then.

Until then, I've got more pressing things to be worrying about, you know?

Christian, but not the same theology as my family because I don't like the idea of predestination, especially pertaining to salvation. I go to the same church, but I kinda have my own views on some things.

Re: Religion

(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
My extended family is pretty religious (Lutheran) but my parents were going through a weird late New Age hippie phase when I was a kid, so I didn't go to church. Instead, they tried to expose us to various "spiritual practices" around the community from various religions/spiritual groups. But then they got tired of that, and just stopped caring. We never cared either, but I ended up being more of a spiritually inclined(?) person. I'm atheist but am really at home spiritually with pantheism/animism, and consider myself a very informal pagan.
