Re: Religion
(Anonymous) 2014-03-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)I also dislike handwaving rationalizations like, "It's God's will" or "God works in mysterious ways", because they're non-explanations meant to shut down the conversation as well as the thought process behind it.

So it is literally way more complicated than I make it sound, but, that's it. That's my answer.

I believe in God, and I'm pretty certain I believe in Jesus Christ, but I simply don't believe in people enough to sign on to any organization.

As for why, because atheism doesn't quite make sense to me on an instinctive level, and agnosticism is kinda unsatisfying and feels like being in a limbo. Like, I'd rather pick a hypothesis that might be bogus than not pick a hypothesis at all. (Of course, that's just what it feels like to me personally.)
Granted, I'm sure all religions are more metaphor than anything and are all at least 50% bogus if not more, but that doesn't mean they're 100% bogus. I view them as being like the blind men with the elephant -- you know something's there, but you only have a tiny highly misleading piece of the truth and it might feel totally different than another persons' piece, and you could totally be extrapolating all wrong due to the fact that your lived experience and memory gives you biases.
Re: Religion
Why? Hmm. I believe there is a fundamental good that can overcome a fundamental evil. I find it highly unlikely that a bunch of separate people just hoaxed Jesus' entire story into being. I find it hard to believe that the earth and everything in it is nothing more than an accident (I should clarify that this does not mean I reject scientific assertions re: the origin of the earth, I just believe there was more to it than just chance). I find it hard to believe that emotions such as love, sorrow, and awe came about purely as evolutionary byproducts. I think we have a physical and spiritual aspect to ourselves.

Re: Religion
(Anonymous) 2014-03-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)Overall, I essentially think there's a bit of truth in all religions, and that the Bible - both Christian and Hebrew - is more a series of parables with some of that same truth. So it's not that I see the Bible as bogus - I just see it as a transcribed retelling of retellings of retellings.
So there you have it.

Can't tell you why. I just thought about it long and hard when I was about twelve and came to the conclusion that it made sense for me and I wanted to continue being a Catholic.
Granted, I'm a pretty terrible Catholic, but thems the breaks.

And there isn't really a reason behind it, except I was not raised religious, I don't live in a particularly religious country nor do I feel any connection to an Higher Power.
I was baptised in THe Church of Norway (Protestant Lutheranism) but my confirmation was in The Norwegian Atheist and Agnostic society...Re: Religion

And after reading the bible I concluded either god doesn't exist or he's a mega asshole. Either way it's not something I want to be part of.
Re: Religion
(Anonymous) 2014-03-18 12:09 am (UTC)(link)However, I never much got the hard atheist ways of thinking either, because the sensation of trying to prove a negative ran me into the exact same problems. I couldn't honestly say that I believed there was no force out there that might be called a deity in some form or another. I just basically didn't have the proof/information.
Agnosticism fits me, more or less. I honestly don't know what shape the universe is or what forces may inhabit it. I think I more or less figure that whatever religion is right, if any, I'll find out when it comes time to meet the maker or whatever, and we'll sort it out then. Until then I'm just gonna life my life as seems most right from first principles, and if the powers that be want to argue with me about it come end of days, I can do that too. And if the hard atheists are right and it's just an empty void beyond death, well, then I don't have to worry about it none either. I'll get there when I get there, and we'll see what way it works then.
Until then, I've got more pressing things to be worrying about, you know?
