Nope. As for why, it's mainly because I just don't subscribe to the idea that there's a benevolent deity watching over the world. I try not to be cynical about this, but once you've seen so many terrible things happen to good people, it's really, really hard to believe that any deity who loves their followers would let this happen.

I also dislike handwaving rationalizations like, "It's God's will" or "God works in mysterious ways", because they're non-explanations meant to shut down the conversation as well as the thought process behind it.

Well, he doesn't have to be benevolent. :P One thing I sort of struggle with is combining my belief in science and religion. I sort of belief in a hands off God. Like he created us and decided just to watch us. Like when you play Sims and just let them do what they want.

Sure. But why follow a malevolent God who does crappy things to you just for laughs? You can certainly make an argument for Deism, as you described, but that's not what the majority of mainstream Christian sects believe. They believe that God listens to and answers their prayers. They believe that God intercedes in their lives, and they thank him for his blessings.

However... they don't blame him when bad things happen. They explain those away in such a fashion that God's excused for allowing someone to break into your house and steal all your things, or for your best friend to be killed by a drunk driver. I don't like that inconsistency. It's easier for me to buy the concept that there is no God rather than there's a God, but he doesn't care and/or won't act on your behalf at all.

I'm kind of surprised you gave those examples. Like, if you'd brought up tsunamis or natural disasters that's one thing, but the whole point of free will is that people are free to be horrible people if they want. So blaming God for something another human did doesn't make theological sense if you believe in free will.

Natural disasters are a good argument against a benevolent God. But I'm not sure that the whole "free will" means that God's off the hook for not protecting the innocent against the horrible things people do to one another. Especially because as destructive as natural disasters are, they're outstripped by the evil acts people perpetrate on other people.

If that's what you call theological sense, well, I think you've hit upon a good reason for why I'm not religious. I have no idea why anyone would find that a legitimate excuse.
