It was a style decision, presumably to save detail so that pages could be drawn and uploaded at a fast pace. It's made fun of at the very beginning of the comic to fuck with the readers by trying to get them to help John find his arms.

Thanks. I've never read the comic and all I know of it is what I see in the secrets here. That's one mystery solved.
