My question is, do you want thoughtful, literate reviews that actually commentate/critique/discuss your plot or do you just want a large number of mindless squee reviews? Because you can have one or the other.

Long, plotty, well-researched fics suffer from lower review numbers because they actually make idiots think, and a lot of idiots don't want to think, they just want something to squee at. Your loyal readers will love every well-researched paragraph of historical accuracy, while idiots will likely fail to understand it, or even argue with you over how accurate it is.

Amen.

Yeah, I sometimes get jealous of the sheer number of reviews the id-and-popular-tropes fics get. But then I re-read the PMs and reviews of the little following I've somehow gathered, and I realize that I wouldn't trade them for the world.

And if I get something wrong, phone it in, or gloss over, they WILL let me know. So that's heartwarming in its own inimitable way. :)

I agree for the most part with what your saying but why the unnecessary "idiots" remark?

For all you know, those "idiots" spend their entire day thinking hard for work or school and just want to have some fluffy, fanfic to unwind afterwards.

For all I know they could be.

+1

I gotta say, if I ever get into writing fanfic, squee-fic is something I'd stay waaay far away from. Check out the comments in those fics you're envying, OP. People tend to think that they have a personal connection with the author of id-fics these days and they get skeevy and creepy AS FUCK. If you want that, then you can cater to it, but lord, I know I'd rather not have 100 skeevy people telling me how wet they get when they think about my typey hands typing.
