I had to google her to figure out who she was and I still don't know (other than a singer).

Also, this lovely bit of trivia that is probably Tumblr's fault. "In August 2012 Allen was accused of racism after writing "I hate it when black cab drivers spend the entire journey on the phone. I WANTED A CHAT !". Allen responded that in Britain and Europe taxicabs are called "black cabs" because they are painted black."

To be fair to tumblr, I would've thought the same thing. Also, they have black taxis across the pond? You learn something new everyday.

Black cabs are a thing. They are cabs that are coloured black. People don't get to decide that the mere mention of the word "black" makes something immediately suspicious. This isn't Orwell's 1984.

I was in London two weeks ago. Not all "black cabs" are black! Lots of them are painted or wrapped in colorful advertising. Unlike yellow cabs in NYC, which are actually yellow. Or the new green cabs, which are green.

Oh JFC, I can see where this is going - "they're all covered in advertising now so sticking to 'black cab' is increasingly inaccurate despite it being the term used for several eternities - therefore any connotations must be lingering racism and they need to be renamed".

Agreed so hard. It's always yellow cab here. Even if they're green. Or white. Or blue. Or gold. Or black. I always thought that was weird, but, it's still a yellow cab/taxi.

(They were painted yellow so you could see them in the crowd easier)

I'd not heard about that. But yes in London we say Black Cab because it distinguishes between a classic London Taxi, the iconic one, which is painted black, and a mini cab, which is a car being used as a taxi. How funny, poor her!

Her Dad is Keith Allen, who is an actor, did a lot of comedy stuff back in the day.
